That's the point really, it's not difficult, it's just something else you have to do that at that point is completely boring. The excitement factor of making a missionary and sending them to a foreign city, possibly overseas, was very, very low for me.

Because they plan to bring religions back in an expansion ;-)"Never trust a man who puts your profit before his own profit." - Grand Nagus Zek, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, episode 11

What I never liked about the UN was that it didn't allow votes for all the civics choices. What if I wanted everyone to adopt state property rather than environmentalism, which I never use?“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. The AP was the worst part of the dynamics. I have just conquered a city and suddenly they want me to give it away and I have to suffer +3because I am evil. And this is even when I am using Free Religion or Theocracy with another religion.
For religion in general, the Civ IV model does need improvement, but don't scrap it altogether. I just think religion was a bit too positive, your goal always was get as much as you can as fast as you can.
I want to see an option to chose the properties for your religion (i.e. militaristic that would give +10% units construction, organized -10% maintenance, spiritual +1 happiness ... ) In that way, not all religions are exactly the same and it makes sense to pick one as opposed to the other. Also, lets implement religious intolerance and prosecutions, we do have slavery, police state and crusades anyway.
Without some sort of religion in it, Civ V would be a step backwards.

I thought that the implementation of Religion was one of the more innovative and well-executed elements of Civ4. For the most part it provided a combination of culture growth, happiness, the possiblity of income from the holy city (a low tech analog of a corporation), and the positive and negative influences it had over rival AI civs was a major fun factor for single player Civ 4. Some of the stuff that came along in expansions, like the Apolyptic Palace sort of took it over the top, but the original implementation was solid. The new game will be somewhat diminished without it in my opinion.
However, I also could very easily foresee religion coming back in an expansion..."Cunnilingus and Psychiatry have brought us to this..."

If the link between religion and diplomacy was cut, the game play could be slightly better. As it was, religion became useful only for diplomatic ends in high level SP, which kinda nullifies the real coolness of it.You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Like most other elements in the game, religion had it's strengths and weaknesses. Overall, they did a pretty good job with it, and it was indeed well integrated into the game.
But from the sound of things, it looks like they are making big changes in the diplomacy area of the game. So I can understand how they might want to keep religion out of the picture until they see how the new diplomacy system works.
As OliverFA suggests, I wouldn't be surpised to see it in an expansion pak later.Keep on Civin'

I haven't played CivIV, but it sounds to me like they implemented religion more or less perfectly. The lack of distinct traits for religions has been called PC, but really each of the world's major religions has manifested in almost every possible way at different times, so that to nail one down as "militaristic" or "intellectual" or what-have-you is to go against history to some extent.
Christianity gave us the Crusades...and the Quakers. Confucianism has a strong support for scholarship...while clinging fiercely to tradition and opposing new ideas. Islam dictates that unbelievers be treated as second-class citizens or worse...but for centuries that was better treatment than they got from anyone else. A religion can be almost anything its followers want it to be.

i hope they do better with the espionage, though. my late-game is usually riddled with a string of minor annoyances, which have no real effect on the outcome of the game other than annoying me.I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.
