  • Innovation: the Apolyton Civ 5 Wishlist

i would just be happy with an honest-to-god spherical map. this cylindrical nonsense is a little 1998. we have the technology, why can't we just go for it?
I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

    I'd even settle for toroidal.

doesn't civ 4 already have a toroidal map option?

          geosphere

and I would also like to see a climate model that changes as a result of human activity and natural cycles
To us, it is the BEAST.

And how about long-term land degradation with higher-production farming? Desertification?

River pollution without a city sewage treatment plant, and with over-use of fertilizers on farm tiles, affecting the river for several tiles downstream.

How about, instead of victory conditions, the game just ends when the humans overpopulate the planet, cause a mass plant and animal extinction, and then eventually fight over the remaining resources until eventually dying out themselves?
To us, it is the BEAST.

                Here's an idea:

                Different types of wars

This idea would make wars more interesting as well as represent the historical causes of wars.

When a player declares war on another civ, they would have to pick the type of war from a set of options. These options would affect what happens to the conquered city.

                The options would be:
War of Conquest (conquered city joins your civ)
War of Liberation (Conquered city joins a third civ of your choice)
War of Religion (Conquered city stays part of other civ but adopts your state religion)
War of Extermination (Conquered city is automatically razed)
War of Ideology (Conquered city becomes new civ with same civics as yours)

Each option would carry with it different diplomatic penalties/bonuses. For example of war of extermination would carry a severe diplomatic penalty with the other civ. A war of liberation would grant you a diplomatic bonus with the civ who gains the city.

The Attacker could change the type of war during the war. Thus, a war of religion could become a war of extermination. Also, the system could be tied in nicely with the diplomatic system. So for example, when you get the option to request a civ change civics, if they refused, you would have the option in the diplomacy screen to declare a "war of ideology". Also, there could be different declaration of war messages depending on the type. So, if another civ declares a religious war on you, the message might read, "We will prove our god is stronger than yours! (war of religion)". If it is a war of extermination, the message might read, "We will wipe you off the face of the earth! (war of extermination)"

This type of system would definitely allow for more variety in wars, making them more interesting. Players would know what the stakes are.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

I'd like natural wonders. They'd be randomly generated at the start of the game and would offer bonuses to science/culture/trade depending on what it is.

Eg Giant's Causeway would give culture in early game and a science bonuis upon discovery of geology.

Harbour of Rio would give additional trade routes. Everest would have troops in the closest city given a free promotion (the attack/defence/movement in hills one).

Perhaps they would require an improvement to be built. It could be religious (early game), upgradable to scientific (after getting certain techs mid game), then upgradable to tourist (late game).

                  Also, nice avatar Sava.
