  • Future Civ games

Ok guys, I might be missing something but the horizon for the next Cic type game looks pretty bleek.

What game are you looking forward to, we've so far had the Civ3, PTW & MOO3 let downs (you can argue this in the relevant forums if you dont agree).

All we have seemed to do is look forward to these much hyped games over the last 2 years only to feel let down by the ill-conceived cash hungry game.

Whats new on the horrizon then, what are you looking forward to. Will we ever get the "perfect" (or as near as possibe) game to satisfy the vast majority of us? I want to feel those vibes again like when I first played Civ1 or Elite all those years ago.

There's Freeciv for the enthusiasts out there. Challenging in SP with lots of opponents but it shines in MP. Sort of a " Civ- Pro" for the community

There's also c-evo, and clash of course.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

      Hi Barley.

Yeah, the commercial houses do seem to be stuck in a rather serious rut. The lack of any real progress in the directions I want civ-type games to go is what drove me to start Clash of Civilizations. Of course there is no such thing as the ultimate civ game since designing any such game involves accepting a set of tradeoffs that some people will like, and others won't. But if you just want something original and interesting, as Civ 1 was in its day, you'll get it at some point. From the commercial outfits it might be another decade though .

GalCiv seems to have some promise, but of course if you want an historical 4x game it won't do you much good. If you are really serious in wanting to see something really new that you like come out. . . Check out the alt civs projects, some of which were listed by CapTVK, and volunteer to help build the one that most catches your interest!

Think ill have a look at some of these, free civ sounds interesting if MP is good. I'll look at them all.

Hope the mainstream producers pull their finger out real soon. Otherwise I think it would be an idea for the poly community to design, code and publish their own game. We could sell shares etc. Well i'd stump up £50 or £100 (maybe more).

I'm sure between us we have the knowledge, contacts, ideas etc. to pull it off. Might even make a profit to.

Come on Mods who's going to set the ball rolling, can we start doing some research and put together a business plan. I am a Test Analyst for User Acceptance Testing for a large bank so I'll voluteer to Plan and coordiate the UAT. Who else is in?

Perhaps the future really does lie in labours of love rather than commercial games..........but I still hold out hopes for Civ4, or even SMAC2.

            Keep your eye on RoN.

If Brian Reynolds, Jason Coleman, et al, can't give us an interesting game, I might go back to reading books.

                Galactic Civilizations.
<Kassiopeia> you don't keep the virgins in your lair at a sodomising distance from your beasts or male prisoners. If you devirginised them yourself, though, that's another story. If they devirginised each other, then, I hope you had that webcam running.

I'm tired of CivGames right now (except for the odd game of Alpha Centauri). They need to release better ones - Infinite City Sprawl really gets up my nose. There are times when you feel more like being Singapore than being Russia in terms of size and manageability; but small countries can't survive in almost any CivGame.

You can play civ2 with 8-12 cities very effectively if you have the skill..........most of the early landing records are in fact from such games.

I think that GalCiv is showing the way. If Civ only gets to instaure what GalCiv has, it will already be a great innovation.
