  • Future Civ games

Ok guys, I might be missing something but the horizon for the next Cic type game looks pretty bleek.

What game are you looking forward to, we've so far had the Civ3, PTW & MOO3 let downs (you can argue this in the relevant forums if you dont agree).

All we have seemed to do is look forward to these much hyped games over the last 2 years only to feel let down by the ill-conceived cash hungry game.

Whats new on the horrizon then, what are you looking forward to. Will we ever get the "perfect" (or as near as possibe) game to satisfy the vast majority of us? I want to feel those vibes again like when I first played Civ1 or Elite all those years ago.

Not sure if the OT forum is the best place for this but thought what the hell.

There's a forum Civ Games General/Future for such a thread.
Looking forward to Galciv anyway, and coding Clash.

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Yes, it sure is much better when companies don't patch bugs.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

Civ1 and Elite were groundbreaking games that each opened a whole new genre, so I don't think we can expect the same within this already existing genre.

Maybe the closest that I hope for are Massively Multiplayer Persistent versions of the same. Apparently MS are trying that for Elite with a game called Freelancer (not sure how it is faring so far). With civ, I could imagine a huge universe of planets, solar systems, etc, whre players start on a planet with others newbies and gradually improve tech etc until they can explore and become interplanetary powers. But the scale would be vast, and I requite a lot of support, and who would map out all the future techs so that there was no end and good players didn't spend their whole time wiping out newbies, etc...so many problems and i have no answers...

I just thought it sounded interesting

                    srholmes, that does sound interesting.

I also started a post in the future games thread - some interesting replies Mod can you merge these 2 threads?

                    I just posted this

"Think ill have a look at some of these, free civ sounds interesting if MP is good. I'll look at them all.

Hope the mainstream producers pull their finger out real soon. Otherwise I think it would be an idea for the poly community to design, code and publish their own game. We could sell shares etc. Well i'd stump up £50 or £100 (maybe more).

I'm sure between us we have the knowledge, contacts, ideas etc. to pull it off. Might even make a profit to.

Come on Mods who's going to set the ball rolling, can we start doing some research and put together a business plan. I am a Test Analyst for User Acceptance Testing for a large bank so I'll voluteer to Plan and coordiate the UAT. Who else is in?"

Is there any way the poly community could take something like this forward?

What I would like is for someone to improve the AI on existing games such as Alpha Centauri. Alpha Centauri II could have an updated story, but it should have essentially the same rules and features as the current game. With the rapid increase in computer horsepower, we should be able to get a better AI without unduly taxing the patience of the player.

In action games, the games are constantly getting better due to the better AI's. True, the graphics are better, but the AI's are a lot better as well. I have not seen a corresponding increase in AI skill in Civ. games.

Another thing I would like in any new Civ game is to to be able to vary the skill level of the AI, not so much by giving it rule advantages, but by giving it the ability to think longer. Computer chess games are all programmed this way.

Yeah, Civ III really killed my taste for buying new Civ games. I continue to play -- and enjoy playing -- SMACX.
