Interesting article, Panag. 'Twas a fair and balanced story, IMHO.

Well I went. Didn't get to try out the new 17 inch screen Titanium Powerbook G4 or the 12 inch screen Titanium Powerbook G4. It was cool tho, and someone sold my friend 256 mb of ram which was actually 128.

            17 INCH !

            hi ,

thats going to be a bestseller :thumbs-up:

            have a nice day

The next big thing from Apple: The new 17-inch PowerBook G4. Featuring the largest, most spectacular display ever to grace a portable, miraculously engineered into a 1-inch-thin notebook that’s ultralight (just 6.8 pounds), ultradesirable — and starts at $3299.

            Megawide 17-inch display
It’s the first thing you’ll notice about the world’s first notebook computer with a 17-inch display, the largest ever in a notebook. When open, it’s vast. This PowerBook’s breathtaking display offers the same viewing area as a 19-inch CRT monitor. You’ll love the amount of information you can see on the screen at one time. It supports a resolution of 1440-by-900 pixels — an eye-popping 1.3 million pixels appearing on the screen simultaneously, with room aplenty for your menus, toolbars and palettes.

Futuristic backlit keyboard with ambient light sensor
Another first from Apple featured on the new 17-inch PowerBook G4: a unique fiber optic backlit keyboard with laser-etched keys that’s right out of the future. A light sensor automatically adjusts the keyboard and screen brightness based on the available ambient light. In low light, for example, the PowerBook G4 automatically lowers its display backlight and turns on the backlit keyboard. Then light-emitting fiber optic strands located under the keyboard come to life and illuminate the backlit keyboard so you can continue to work, unaffected by the change in ambient light.

            The legendary SuperDrive
Your PowerBook G4 with SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) comes loaded with iDVD software, and can be used to burn DVDs which can be played in most consumer DVD players. The SuperDrive also lets you use iTunes to burn your own music CDs, and the Disc Burner feature in Mac OS X to burn data CDs. The SuperDrive reads DVD titles at 6x, and writes to 4.7-gigabyte DVD-R discs at 1x.

            Fast FireWire 800
With more than 30 times the bandwidth of the popular USB peripheral standard, FireWire 400 has become the gold standard for high-speed data transfer. And now Apple has upped the ante yet again, effectively doubling data throughput with FireWire 800. The new 17-inch PowerBook G4 has two FireWire ports — one for the hundreds of FireWire 400 peripherals already available, and the other for the coming generation of FireWire 800 peripherals.

54Mbps AirPort Extreme — up to 5 times faster
The new 17-inch PowerBook G4 features the hot new 802.11g AirPort Extreme technology — at 54Mbps, the fastest wireless connection available on a Mac. The 17-inch PowerBook G4 comes with AirPort Extreme installed. And since AirPort Extreme is backward-compatible with 802.11b networks — and with thousands of wireless “hot spots” in hotels, airport lounges, coffee shops and bookstores around the world — you’ll be able to use your PowerBook G4 to get online from practically anywhere.

            Sync with Bluetooth
Bluetooth is built-in to the new 17-inch PowerBook G4 model. Like AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth connects digital devices wirelessly. Operating within a much shorter range than AirPort, it enables high-speed wireless data transfers between a rapidly growing list of Bluetooth-savvy products. Using iSync, for instance, you can use Bluetooth to synchronize your personal information between your PowerBook, your mobile phone and your Palm OS-based handheld. And Bluetooth lets you take advantage of GPRS connectivity to check your email from anywhere — a benefit that comes in handy on those occasions when a 802.11 wireless hotspot isn’t available.

            Leading-edge industrial design
You’ll love the high-resolution 17.1-inch TFT XGA active-matrix display with brilliant 1440-by-900-pixel resolution. And you’ll marvel at the way we’ve fitted this supersharp display into such a remarkably small frame — just 15.4 inches wide, 10.2 inches deep, 1.0 inches thin and weighing a mere 6.4 pounds. Housed in a lightweight and durable aluminum alloy enclosure, the new 17-inch PowerBook G4 is resistant to stains and scratches. It also features an all-new, drop-dead gorgeous design — perfectly smooth on all surfaces, with no doors, protruding latches or levers to break, no external buttons to accidentally press, and no sharp edges to catch on your clothing.

            High-speed architecture
The 1GHz processor on the 17-inch PowerBook G4 gives a tremendous performance boost with an advanced cache memory architecture that provides ultrafast dedicated memory with massively enhanced throughput. The 17-inch PowerBook G4 features 256K backside level 2 cache and 1MB of L3 cache. Accessing data from main memory is significantly faster than accessing data from the hard drive, but L3 cache — which boosts processor function by providing phenomenally fast access to data and application software code — gives this PowerBook G4 an even faster level of memory. The 17-inch PowerBook G4 comes with 512MB of DDR SDRAM. And that’s expandable to 1GB of RAM — allowing you to run several RAM-hungry applications simultaneously, or to store an entire graphics project in main memory for fast image manipulations.

            Lightning-fast graphics
            Lightning-fast graphics
The new 17-inch PowerBook G4 ships with the NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go graphics processor with 64MB of DDR SDRAM. Kicking 3D graphics performance into overdrive with hardware transform and lighting (T&L) and an advanced ultra efficient memory architecture (Lightspeed Memory Architecture II), the NVIDIA GeForce4 delivers a dynamic, visually rich, real-time 3D graphics experience.

Choose from three ultrafast models: small, medium or epic
Starting from just $1799, the new PowerBook gives you supercomputing power in a choice of three ultrafast portables. They range from a 12-inch model — the smallest, most affordable PowerBook G4 ever — to the 15-inch Titanium beauty, and the world’s first 17-inch notebook computer. So you can be as effective on the road as you are at your desk — accomplishing everything from rendering huge image files to crunching digital video — faster than ever before.

              PowerBook G4 15"

              PowerBook G4 17"

One of the first things you notice about these PowerBooks — after you admire their looks, and marvel at their fit and finish — is the number of ports they have on the back and sides. And that’s when the realization hits you: these models may be superslim and ultralight, but they also happen to be full-featured notebooks with an astonishing lineup of built-in professional capabilities.

Therein lies a huge difference between the PowerBook G4 and its PC counterparts: Unlike some PC manufacturers who ship lightweight PC notebooks that shed pounds by shedding functionality (even to the point of shipping neutered notebooks without so much as an optical drive), Apple makes no compromises. All three PowerBook G4 models feature optical drives — the legendary SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) on the 17-inch and 15-inch models, and the DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo drive (upgradeable to the SuperDrive) on the 12-inch model.

Check out the strategically located ports: all three models feature FireWire and USB, with an additional FireWire 800 port on the 17-inch PowerBook G4. Need video out capabilities so you can connect to an external display or projector? The DVI port on the 17-inch and 15-inch models lets you do just that. In fact, the DVI port on the 17-inch and 15-inch PowerBooks and the VGA port on the 12-inch PowerBook can even detect when they are connected to an external display or projector (the system automatically displays to the external monitor when you connect it to the PowerBook). And all three PowerBook models feature S-video output for connecting to an analog TV.

Huge hard drives? You bet. How about a 56K modem? That’s standard across the line. Wireless connectivity? You got it. Bluetooth? It’s built in with the 17-inch and 12-inch models and is available for the 15-inch model. What’s more, the 17-inch and 15-inch models come with Gigabit Ethernet (10/100BASE-T Fast Ethernet on the 12-inch model). In other words, the PowerBook G4 gives you exactly what you’re looking for in a notebook computer — everything.

Presenting the new 12-inch PowerBook G4, featuring a brilliant 12-inch active-matrix display housed in a durable aluminum alloy enclosure weighing just 4.6 pounds. The most compact full-featured notebook in the world starts at just $1799

It’s the smallest portable we’ve ever shipped. In terms of volume (measured in cubic inches), the 12-inch PowerBook G4 is smaller than the iBook and even the PowerBook Duo, and yet it features a slot-loading combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW). The 12-inch PowerBook G4 packs formidable processing power for busgraphic design and editing digital video — not to mention playing 3D games, listening to music and watching DVD movies between flights.

                Leading-edge industrial design
You’ll love the high-resolution 12.1-inch TFT XGA active-matrix display with brilliant 1024-by-768-pixel resolution. And you’ll marvel at the way we’ve fitted this supersharp display into such a remarkably small frame — just 10.9 inches wide, 8.6 inches deep, 1.18 inches thin and weighing a mere 4.6 pounds. Housed in a lightweight and durable aluminum alloy enclosure, the PowerBook G4 is resistant to stains and scratches. I’s also perfectly smooth on all surfaces, with no doors, protruding latches or levers to break, no external buttons to accidentally press, and no sharp edges to catch on your clothing.

54Mbps AirPort Extreme — up to 5 times faster
Pop in the new AirPort Extreme Card in your 12-inch PowerBook’s AirPort slot, and you’re ready for 54Mbps wireless networking. And with thousands of wirelessly-enabled “hot spots” in hotels, airport lounges, coffee shops and bookstores around the world, you can get online from practically anywhere. What’s more, you can use your PowerBook G4, AirPort Extreme and Rendezvous — the technology that recognizes and links computers and digital devices to each other — to create your own secure wireless network.

                The Bluetooth connection
Bluetooth, built-in to the new 12-inch PowerBook G4 model, connects digital devices wirelessly.

                PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine
This 867MHz PowerBook G4 delivers blazing-fast performance thanks to its processor’s aptly named Velocity Engine, which processes data in huge 128-bit chunks, instead of the 32-bit or 64-bit chunks used in traditional processors. The PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine works with the PowerPC architecture to accelerate the data-intensive processing required by next-generation video, voice and graphics applications.

                Lightning-fast graphics
The new 12-inch PowerBook G4 ships with the NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go graphics processor with 32MB of DDR SDRAM. Kicking 3D graphics performance into overdrive with hardware transform and lighting (T&L) and an advanced ultra efficient memory architecture (Lightspeed Memory Architecture II), the NVIDIA GeForce4 delivers a dynamic, visually rich, real-time 3D graphics experience.

Think big back at the office
The new 12-inch PowerBook G4 comes with built-in support for VGA, S-Video and composite video signals. And since VGA video output supports dual display mode and video mirroring, you can extend your work area and mirror your projects to an external display or projector — perfect for presentations and for sharing your ideas. You can also display your multimedia projects on a big-screen TV, thanks to S-Video output capability: Simply connect your TV to the video output port via the included Apple video adapter, and you’re on television.

                    SUPERDRIVE - thats really a superdrive !

Never before has professional-quality DVD-burning on the go been as affordable as it is with this new batch of SuperDrive-equipped PowerBook G4 models.

If you think about it, what you’re looking at is a matchless feat of engineering. Consider the fact that when Apple first introduced the SuperDrive on high-end Power Mac G4 workstations, DVD recording systems typically cost over $15,000. Suddenly, thanks to the SuperDrive and iDVD 3 software, DVD-burning capabilities were within the reach of all Power Mac customers.

The question remained, however, whether the legendary SuperDrive could be engineered into a notebook as slim as the PowerBook G4. The answer was yes, and when the first SuperDrive-equipped PowerBook G4 was announced, it won an instant following.

Maybe the biggest news this time around is that we’ve re-engineered the price to make DVD-burning on the go even more affordable. Starting from just $1999, this new batch of SuperDrive-equipped PowerBook G4 models gives you the best medium out there to distribute your movies and other digital media content.

Imagine what you can do with your SuperDrive
The SuperDrive-equipped PowerBook G4 lets you add professional-quality DVD production to your skill-set. Besides outstanding production values, the DVD format lets you add scads of bonus material — like stills, interviews, soundbites, theme music and in-depth background information — to your movies and presentations. The SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) lets you read and burn music and data CDs, as well as DVDs that can be played in most consumer DVD players. The SuperDrive plays DVD movies — the kind you buy or rent — and writes to 4.7-gigabyte DVD-R discs, and it reads CDs and writes to CD-R and CD-RW disks.

Better still, the SuperDrive-equipped PowerBook G4 is compatible across the line, supporting DVD-Video, DVD-ROM and DVD-R, as well as CD-ROM, CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, CD Bridge, CD Extended, CD Mixed Mode and Photo CD media.

Two ways to create your own DVDs
There are two software applications that enable you to create your own DVDs. Naturally, they both come from Apple: iDVD 3 and DVD Studio Pro. iDVD 3, which comes included on your SuperDrive-equipped PowerBook G4, gives you a simple, one-window interface for assembling DVDs with drag-and-drop ease of use. DVD Studio Pro, on the other hand, is a high-end, prescription-strength DVD authoring application with precise controls designed to satisfy the most demanding perfectionist. Both applications come with QuickTime MPEG encoding capabilities that have effectively changed the rules in the DVD publishing industry.

Data archiving on CD and DVD
Optical discs are ideal for backup because they offer huge capacity in a format that’s both easy to store and lasts a long time. CDs can hold up to 650MB of data, more than 450 times as much as a floppy disk. DVDs can store a mind-boggling 4.7GB of data, the equivalent of about 18 Zip 250 disks or 3200 floppy disks (in case you’re interested, that’s a stack of floppies over 40 feet high). With this kind of capacity, you can easily back up your portfolio, your entire digital photo collection, up to 90 minutes of video or thousands of MP3 files — and store them safely for years.

                      Graphics

The PowerBook G4’s unparalleled graphics performance results from a combination of factors, chief among them powerful graphics processors, Mac OS X, OpenGL, stunning displays, and — not least — the way they all combine to create eye-popping effects in millions of colors.

                      Sizzling graphics processors
Whichever PowerBook G4 you choose, you can be sure comes with a turbocharged graphics processor — the NVIDIA GeForce4 Go and the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000.

The new 17-inch and 12-inch PowerBook G4 models now feature the NVIDIA GeForce 4 Go graphics processor. Coming from a company synonymous with high-end graphics, you know the GeForce4 Go will kick your 2D and 3D performance into overdrive. The GeForce4 Go family incorporates advanced features such as hardware transform and lighting as well as the Lightspeed Memory Architecture (LMA) II. LMA II improves memory bandwidth to ensure fluid frame rates for the latest 2D and 3D games and pro applications. And speaking of memory, the 12-inch PowerBook features a large 32MB frame buffer using fast DDR SDRAM, while the 17-inch PowerBook features an even larger 64MB DDR SDRAM frame buffer to support pro apps and games with room for larger textures for greater visual realism.

The 15-inch PowerBook G4 features the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics processor with up to 64MB of DDR SDRAM (the 15-inch 867MHz PowerBook G4 features the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics processor with 32MB DDR SDRAM). With the ability to handle six textures in a single pass, and second-generation hardware transform and lighting, the Mobility Radeon 9000 dramatically enhances all aspects of your visual experience in every application. The ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 features a number of cutting-edge graphics technologies, including programmable pixel and vertex shading for lighting and shadow effects never seen before on a notebook computer.

                      Take this simple test
There’s a quick way to assess a computer’s graphics capability, and that’s by taking it out for a spin on a graphics-intensive 3D game. That’s because 3D games demand fast frame rates, and — since each frame of gaming action must be redrawn as quickly as possible — games routinely push the graphics processor to its limits. The frame rate (or how quickly each individual frame of game play is redrawn) is critically important since a faster frame rate creates a smoother, movie-like effect.

                      Quake performance
3D games push the graphics processing unit harder than any other application. And of these 3D games, Quake performance has come to be the benchmark against which all graphics processors are measured. So you’ll be pleased to hear that when playing the Quake III Arena version 1.30, in millions of colors, at 1024x768 resolution, the 1GHz PowerBook G4 15-inch blazes away at a scorching 76 frames per second.*

                      * Higher frame rates indicate better performance. Tests conducted by Apple.

                        Wireless

The PowerBook G4 is packed with state-of-the-art communications capabilities like built-in Gigabit Ethernet, built-in 56K V.92 modem and wireless networking capability with AirPort Extreme.

                        54Mbps — nearly 5x faster
802.11g AirPort Extreme (17-inch and 12-inch PowerBook G4 models) is a powerhouse in the performance department, with the new 802.11g technology delivering a wireless data rate of up to 54 megabits per second (Mbps). The fastest broadband connections typically achieve speeds up to 1.5Mbps. AirPort Extreme, on the other hand, lets you share files with others on your network at speeds of up to 54Mbps — over 35 times faster.

The turbocharged new technology that lets you connect to the Internet without wires, additional phone lines or complicated networking hardware — from anywhere in your home, school or office, up to 150 feet away from a base station.

AirPort Extreme consists of two components: the AirPort Extreme Card and the AirPort Extreme Base Station. Together, they represent the future of wireless networking.

You’ll see how fast this technology really is when you use AirPort Extreme to network other computers in your home or office. In a video production studio, for instance, users can transfer large digital video files between computers at astonishing speeds.

AirPort Extreme is perfect for file sharing, web surfing and multiplayer gaming. Just think of the convenience: instead of handing out hard copies after a presentation, you can transfer your slide show directly from your PowerBook G4 to another. And you can do it securely, with no disks or cable hook-ups required.

                        The wireless Internet is everywhere
AirPort Extreme, like AirPort, uses radio waves to communicate. This works to your advantage: Unlike infrared signals, which require an unobstructed line of sight between the remote unit and the base station, radio waves can pass through solid objects from up to 150 feet away. Which means that you can take your PowerBook G4 into different rooms or onto different floors of a building and still maintain your active network connection — and surf the Internet through walls.

You can use AirPort Extreme to get online wirelessly at hundreds of Starbucks coffeeshops from coast to coast, courtesy of T-Mobile. Staying at a hotel? Log on wirelessly, using your AirPort-enabled PowerBook G4.

Hundreds of hotels around the world have made Wi-Fi compliant 802.11b wireless local area networks (WLANs) available in their guest rooms. Wayport, Inc., for instance, has provided wireless connectivity in thousands of rooms at more than 400 major hotels in the U.S. And because AirPort Extreme is 802.11b compatible, you can use your 17-inch or 12-inch PowerBook G4 (and, of course, your 15-inch model PowerBook G4) to surf the Internet in all of them. And with companies like the Surf and Sip Network creating many more locations to get online wirelessly, it’s getting to the point where you can log on to the Internet from practically anywhere.

                        Tight security
With AirPort Extreme, you get a host of enhanced security features, including 128-bit encryption and firewall protection. AirPort Extreme also provides Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) client support — perfect for schools and colleges.

Wireless Internet access requires AirPort Card or AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Base Station or AirPort Extreme Base Station, or other wireless access point, and Internet access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort and AirPort Extreme. Range may vary with site
