  • COL on newer operating systems

If i can ever find my colonization discs again, i want to reinstall it and play some more, but am i going to have any trouble playing it on windows ME? (I know, i know, ME sucks but i've almost got enough money saved up for win XP)

which also brings up another point, since i've had people tell me that XP is not dos based at all, will COL work on an XP machine?

I'm using Win98 and Colonization doesn't run on it (the DOS version).

I plan to buy WinXP though and I think I've read somewhere that it features a good DOS emulationso that even old DOS games run on it.

I found a document somewhere on the web that told me to change that and that mysterious win98 variable to make MoM run, and it did. I am to lazy to find it again, though.

              Chrono: do you mean

              "No, because WinXP has one"

              or

"Not a single WinXP has one"?

I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.

are you commenting that other thread, where I asked how to get MOM to work?
last time I checked this thread was about Colonization.

VDMSound can emulate a classic SoundBlaster, even if you current soundcard isn't SoundBlaster compatible. The downside is that is only works on Windows NT, 2000 and XP.

                    You can download VDMSound from:

Win XP won't play some DOS games, such as Command and Conquer, But it will play some... The general tip is to select NO SOUND options and do with as little graphics as you can.

If it doesn't work, you might visit the Computer Gaming Magazine's website, as they had an article on configuring old dos-games for XP.

In reference to the mention of CGW's article about getting classic games to wun on XP: That was in the August 2002 issue and written by T. Byrl Baker on page 92 (I haven't looked on the CGW site to see if you can find the information online but the above may help in a google search...)

I can tell you that Master of Magic works under XP with sound. In the case of MoM I run it with the music but no sound effects because those digitized effects REALLY slow down the machine (I run a P4 2.2 so I have serious clock cycles to spare and MoM CRAWLS with digitized sound). Here is a link to a forum on the Classic Gaming MoM forum that details how to get MoM working under XP and I assume it is a great place to start for ideas when trying to run other older games. Good luck!!

P.S. Scroll to the second page and look for bluetempet's instructions. Those are what I followed accept I told XP to emulate 98 instead of 95 (long story but either should work for everyone else) and they worked exactly as he posted.

On a seperate but related note would it have been acceptable to just post a chunk from the classic gaming forum or is that bad netiquette? Hope the instructions help/

I can't get Colonization for Windows to function under win98. it crashes frequently, and especially every time I try to access the colonipedia. am I missing some function to tweak?

I can run col for dos, but NONE of my dos games have sound.
