  • Colonisation question

    Hi!
I have one question about Colonisation.
You see, it was written somewhere that the city range will expand (to the size of the civilization one) when it reaches some size or something. Still, it never happened
in my game though I had cities so big that no more citizens could be added. And anyway, do You build cities thinking
about the future, expanded range or not?

I don't believe that the city radius ever expands beyond 1 square in Colonization.

No. It doesn't. I sometimes think about extended range in Civ3, but never beyond 3 squares.

I think that might have been a feature they planned to put in, but left out in the end.

BTW, Colonization topics should go in the Classic Games category.
"THE" plus "IRS" makes "THEIRS". Coincidence? I think not.

Exactly a bigger colony radius was a feature which was dropped very late in the development of Colonization. It was so late that there are still screenshots of a bigger colony radius on the original box. On the Colony screen there is still enough room for the additional tiles and some fish-resources are two tiles away from the coast (making them useless).

The reason for this was that smaller colony radii (/radiuses ?) lead to more specialized colonies, one just for silver, one for tobacco, etc. - IMO it was a good decision.

Yeah. I liked that. It allowed for really packing together colonies for defensive purposes.

Did you ever have a problem where you declared independence, but the hated English never showed up to take their beating? (My army was larger than theirs before the French showed up to help me).

I haven't played Col for a very long time (it doesn't work on my PC) but there are a lot of bugs in this game concerning the revolution, sometimes a very part of the royal army never showed up, as a result you could never reach independence.

Everything will be better in Col2

I hope so... it is "just" a project that is done by fans of the original, though. And we are not far yet, there is still some need for C++/SDL programmers, also people that would like to do graphics are welcome, and so is everyone else who wants to contribute something.
Follow the link in my sig...

Oh, it's really something! And You seem to be some big figure in it. A shame I won't be able to help You... I'm right now starting a civ2 scn project, and I'll probably have a comp just for a month. tell me, are You going to stay by
the idea of American-only colonisation, or perhaps are you interested also in making civilization a more universial game,
something like civilization, just better (personally I think that colonization is much better than civ in many things, like trade). I know that You'll probably stick to build-yourself-an-
America game, I understand it, the game is so much pointed in that direction itself, but wouldn't it be nice...
Please let me know when You'll finish.
If parents will give me a computer to Warsaw this year, perhaps I'll be able to make some graphics.

                        I'm glad you like it.

Well the first verion of our game will be quite simple and some ideas have to wait for a later version, colonizing different continents has been mentioned quite often allready so perhaps later...

Our code isn't long yet, so even till we have a first version some time will pass, but we'll sure make announcements when we have a beta.

I was really disappointed when I realised a city couldn't have radius of 2. I like building super-cities.
Seeing Aztecs and Incas actually having 2 tile radius in their cities did not help at all.

But in the thinking behind it, there is something more sinister which is shown by the fact that already there are certain areas and topics where freedom of speech, in the sense of the right to open and frank discussion, is being gradually but significantly eroded." -- Judge Neil Denison

Mine problem is that I believed in what they've written and planned location of my citiies in many games like they had 2-tile radius. And some dumb other nations were building their cities in the holes between mines...

experimenting with the add person cheat i would sometimes end up with citizens working tiles that were more than one square away from the city. but most of the time i would end up with 3 people making cigars and three more making cloth when i had no cotton or tobbacco to begin with
