In my current game (playing as High Men on Hard difficulty), I built the Animist's Guild in a city, figuring I could generate enough food in that city to support my whole army. To my dismay, each time I change a citizen from a worker to a farmer, it only seems to add one and a half food to the city production. I was expecting three food sheaves per farmer! I double checked, and the Animist's Guild does appear in the city view. Do I need some additional improvement to activate the extra food, or is one of the many extant improvments (bank, alchemist's guild) nullifying the extra food? The city is a captured city in a terrible location, with a few desert squares and lots of water.

I don't know the exact formula, but there's a diminishing-returns effect as you switch more and more citizens to food production. This is true in any city; food production is helped by favorable terrain, granary, farmer's market and the animist's guild, but your tenth farmer always produces less food than your first. AFAIK, no building reduces food production."THE" plus "IRS" makes "THEIRS". Coincidence? I think not.
