  • Are Civ1-DOS graphics different from Civ1 for Windows?

I never had the DOS version. In October I got Civ1 for Windows on a game disc that came with Computer Games magazine.

If some of you have played both versions, please tell me what the difference is. Someone said the rulers in the DOS game would scowl. And that the ocean had waves.

I also have CivNet. It looks almost like Civ1 (Win) but has more music and a little newer looking interface.

I've not played the Windows version, but if I remember correctly, there was ocean movement (kind of like in Colonization). And the rulers did scowl.

Compared to the DOS Civ, the graphics are kind of different. The colors are richer, and lines are a little more defined. Pretty much just a different look.

Different versions of the game had different icons for units as well. The settler unit especially, in my early DOS copy it is of a funny guy with pointy ears. By the Windows version it was a wagon.

I just had to revisit some old shelves ...
... and find back the discs!

My first encounter was on a Mac, with a large monitor and smooth graphics. Later I found a sort of low cost edition from "Powerplus" in a store (disc says (C)1991) and I was utterly let down when I saw the poor PC (DOS) graphics!

Luckily I ran into a box of CivNET in a SW-sale (the disc says (C)1995) and the pictures on the box resembled my mac-memories - and yes they were a LOT better! Also - as far as I remeber - better UI. Less F-keys and such(?)

I used to love thr DOS waves. I wish they'd made it back into C3, but no such luck.

yeah i loved the waves too, i had the version before that as well and the graphics were mostly gray. grassland had green dots, plains had yellow, they redid the civ graphics a lot.
