  • Some questions about Master of Magic

I downloaded this game and I have to say that it absolutely rocks.

I've read what little there is on the websites, but I still have some questions.

    1. Is there any benefit to having a food surplus? As far as I can see there isn't one.

    2. How do I get mithril and admantium weapons?

    3. Is there a detailed comparison of the different races anywhere?

    4. Is there any way to upgrade units, i.e. spearmen to pikemen, or re-equip units with magic weapons?

    5. Is there any way to arrange forces before a battle?

    Anyone care to help me?

for every two food in surplus, you get one gold.

    2. How do I get mithril and admantium weapons?

You have to have mithril or adamantium in your city radius. City must have an alchemists guild or you take the alchemy retort for your wizard

    3. Is there a detailed comparison of the different races anywhere?

In the rulebook there is a comparison, but as far as websites I don't think there is one that compares ALL of them.

But, anyone here who plays the game can give you them.

    4. Is there any way to upgrade units, i.e. spearmen to pikemen, or re-equip units with magic weapons?

No, you can not upgrade units, except via experience.

    5. Is there any way to arrange forces before a battle?

No, forces are arranged with melee units in front and ranged units in the rear.

Alchemy retort makes only 'magical weapons', not mithrill or adamantium; these weapons require ALLWAYS alchemists guild.

      4. Is there any way to upgrade units, i.e. spearmen to pikemen, or re-equip units with magic weapons?

No, you can not upgrade units, except via experience.

Experience only makes the regular units better (increase on swords/ranged attack, shields, hitpoints, resistance and to-hit bonus (which is VERY essential on units). +1 to-hit bonus on regular units mean 25% better chance on hitting the opponent. Generally an elite spearman is much better than regular swordsman.
I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.

You cannot re-equip units with magic weapons.

You can 'upgrade' your units with magic; cast these spells on your units, and see the enemy die at your feet:
Giant strength - adds 1 sword / figure
Stone skin - adds 1 shield / figure
Iron skin - adds 5 shields / figure
Regeneration - I wonder what this does
Resist elements - +3 resistance against nature&chaos magic and magical ranged attacks
Elemental armor - as resist elements, with +10 resistance
Eldritch weapons - increases to-hit bonus by 10%
        Flame blade - adds 2 swords&ranged / figure
Chaos channels - one of these: speed 2 flight, +2 shields or strength 2 breath attack
Holy weapon - increases to-hit bonus by 10%
Holy armor - adds 2 shields / figure
        Lionheart - adds 3 to swords&ranged, 3 resistance and 3 hearts
Invunerability - negates first 2 hits
        Endurance - +1 movement
Righteousness - Immune to death spells & monster attacks
Lycantrophy - changes the unit to a pack of regenerating werewolves
Black channels - unit becomes undead with +2 attack (but it cannot be healed - very useful on regenerating monsters)
        Invisibility -
        Flight -
Magic immunity - 50 resistance against all magic
Guardian wind - 50 shields against bow&sling attacks
I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.

            I stand corrected. (I forgot)

You get a description of the races when you select them. That doesn't describe their special units, however.

... and those descriptions (by right-clicking a racename) aren't correct. For example according to that one race (lizardmen?) could not make builders hall! Leaves a question: what could they then make?

BTW... Here is a link To the 'ultimate FAQ' of this game...

And here is the official MOM-site (AFAIK).

this game just can't be beaten
                  Hooray!

Thanks aaglo, I've already got the FAQ. I didn't look at it too closely, because it has details of super strategies which I thought might ruin the game.

Wish I hadn't seen that you could make flying warships.... it would have been fun to try and discover it on my own.

ccording to that one race (lizardmen?) could not make builders hall
I didn't notice that. Or maybe it is not so in the French version?
                      But I can't say I'm surprised, either.
