  • I remember playing 36 hours straight without leaving my PC for anything and as soon as a game ended, I'd start a new one. My girlfriend comes over and asks if I'm ready to head off to class. I realized it was tomorrow and I hadn't eaten, showered or changed in over a day.
My answer......"yeah, let me just finish a couple more turns"
No game has ever been as addictive.

Funny thing is I never figured out until years later that the AI would cheat and be granted free WoWs. I always fumed when they just beat me to building one.
.......shhhhhh......I'm lurking.......proud to have been stuck at settler for six years.......

    • I rented Civ1 for the SNES from a video store. I took it home and I remeber my brother had a bunch of friends over, so I holed up in the basement.

I played from 10am till 10pm (bedtime) starting over a lot, (I think I was 10) finally I started killing other countries and began getting hooked.

I continued to rent the game until my 12th birthday when my mom just bought it because the rental list said that we'd spent $100+ on renting it.

I'm pretty sure the diet pepsi I was living on for all those hours of gameplay stunted my growth...

I wish I could've played the computer version sometime though.
First Master, Banan-Abbot of the Nana-stary, and Arch-Nan of the Order of the Sacred Banana.
Marathon, the reason my friends and I have been playing the same hotseat game since 2006...

      • First time i played civ i was 5.... i think.

It was on an Emerson 286 (i don't remember the specs)

One of my parents friends came over for dinner, and they had a son who was like 15 or so. He brought Civ on computer disks (2 disks!). He brought over a photocopied version of the manual too! It is still sitting in my parents' basement.

Anyway, so He was showing my brother how to play and I was watching, but I had no clue what was going on. The game intro was really cool, The PC speaker was really pushing the beats.

I had my brother later start the game for me (he was like 9), because i wasn't very good at the dos commands at that time.

My first game i started as warlord lol. I saw the cool pictures of the difficulties on the left and just clicked. lol... I ended up playing as the mongols. (I didn't even know who they were)

My brother build the first city for me, then he went somewhere else... Had another settler but i didn't know what to do with it, so i moved him around. I ended up build LOTS of catapaults, because the sound when they attacked and won on the PC speaker was impressive.

One funny thing, after a while, i noticed this NEW unit called "caravan". It took a really long time to build, so i thought, "Hey this unit HAS to be good" even though i saw it had no attack. I built it and attacked the chinese city and lost... lol

I never got to finish that game, because my brother actually showed me how to play. But i still wasn't very good, I just wasn't old enough and couldn't think in advance and plan ahead like adults could do.

And then Civ 2 came out and it was impressive! The intro movie didn't work lol... must've been because i only had windows 3.1.
