  • OS X Versions?

All right, I finally got myself a copy of OS X!

    *happy dance*

What I need to know though, is besides CivIII have any of the other games (SMAC, SMAX, Ctp, CivII) been carbonized? And where would I go to get a copy of them if they have been?

Or am I perpetually having to load in Classic if I want to continue to play?

I've seen links for SMAX, but it'd help everybody else (and me) to see them gathered in one place around here so that we can easily download them all quickly.

Civ and WoW are my crack... just one... more... turn...

Still curious and looking for carbonized versions of some of the classic Civ games if they're out there... or is everybody hung up on CivIII?

      FlameFlash:

Check with Macsoft. They handled the Civ II Mac port so I would imagine they would do a carbon if so inclined. I know that when I get a new Mac, I plan on playing both Civ III and II, even if I have to boot up in Classic mode for the latter.

There is a carbonized version for SMAC. I believe Brad Oliver created it. He may have it at his iTools site.

Many thanks, the Asyper site also has the SMAC update 1.5.2.

Gatekeeper, yeah I just was hoping to not have to load Classic if I didn't have to. Waiting to get at least some updates before even getting Civ III. I know what the system requirements say but was wondering if an ol' G4 500 would be able to run it and still multi-task other things. I'm a guy that likes to max out my 640 MB RAM with other programs in the background especially since I've never liked the music that comes with Sid's games.

I'm looking at a 700 mhz G4 iMac ("iLamp") and, maybe, an 800 mhz machine if my savings allow for it. Probably up the RAM to 1 GB if I can. If such a machine can't handle Civ III and a few other programs running in the background, I'd be disappointed (putting it mildly) and surprised.

I'm waiting to buy because Apple is working on 10.2, it's "Jaguar" version of OSX, which is supposed to be much more efficient in terms of speed and whatnot. Problem is, it's not slated for release until fall, and I don't know if I can wait that long. I might have to get a new Mac and be satisfied with 10.1.5.

If you get a new Mac prior to Jaguar's release you can always do their $20 upgrade CD that they always put out for those who just couldn't wait for the newer OS release and got a computer.

True, but doesn't one have to reinstall the other software after performing an OS upgrade? It might not be such a problem with me — I'd have to reinstall Civ III, Civ II, Web browsers and maybe MS Word — but it's still a pain-in-the-buttocks, however short.

Nope! I've gone all the way from system 8 to OS 9.2.2 and never had to reinstall any software.

The same is true when going from an upgrade of X.0 to X.2

Check out FreeCiv (http://www.freeciv.org). Maybe you can install it with fink, too. (http://fink.sourceforge.net)

Excellent news. I've had my current iMac since May 1999 and have never had to do much in the way of maintenance with it. It's a highly reliable, albeit outdated, 333mhz machine.

What are your thoughts on OS 8.6 to OS X?

8.6 was almost useless... it was the OS that jumlped from 8 to 9 so we could use USB devices (it had the first Mac USB support).

9.2.2 is basically just your run-of-the-mill bugs worked out operating system. As long as you don't screw with it too much you honestly won't have too many lock-ups, etc.

X, at this point, for me, is just an extravagence. Apple has done so much work on stablizing 9 for X's Classic environment that 9 is almost the better choice for slower machines, especially since a lot of the programs out there currently are available for both 9 and X.

X is also constantly being debugged currently. It's a great system concept, and maybe my problems and bugs have been unique, but unless Apple actually sticks with X.2 and doesn't charge consumers to upgrade, we're not going to see much in the X area until programs start being released only for X and not for 9.2.2.

But those are my thoughts, and sorry, but you just got hit with my OS X rant...

OS 8.5.1 supports USB devices. I should know, since that's the OS I'm using and the computer shipped with two USB slots (three, if you count the extra one on the keyboard).

*nods* Many thanks on the correction... (then it was that one that must have had the first USB device support.)

How stable is it? I jumped from 8.1 to 9 so I never got to enjoy 8.5.1.

Can't you upgrade that to 8.6?
