Hmm...I've had something similar happen to me earlier with The Sims. Forgot how exactly I cleared it up, but this should be a very fixable and general problem.

What version of StuffIt do you have? (do a find command if you aren't sure, and once in the program go to the apple menu and then "about stuffit...")

And another thing...is the problem opening the final installer or unstuffing it?

        Sure it's version 6.5 and not 5.5?

I'll try and reinstall some of those pesky Sims downloads and see if I can recreate the Stuffit problem and solution...can't really put my finger on it. If you've got the time might as well redownload and try again, but that's probably not going to fix anything. Why an installer would need Stuffit to run is beyond me.

I'd email tech support for now or wait for brad, I'm a little slow.

Try downloading the latest version of Stuffit and see what happens. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem yet, but by tomorrow at this time I'll probably be able to give you a much better solution to try out, after messing around seriously with The Sims again.

                    Try here: http://stuffit.com/expander/macindex.html

Not sure if you've already got that version or not, but it's worth a shot until bradman can explain a better solution for me. No luck reproducing the problem just yet...(I've been extremely busy, but if no one else helps I'll try and have something by Friday. )

This sounds like a weird CarbonLib memory thing. What's happening is that it's trying to launch the installer, it gets halfway through and then dies. Try jacking up the memory allocated to the installer by a meg or three. You didn't mention what version of the MacOS/CarbonLib you have, but that could be part of it. I know that Carbon Stuffit InstallerMaker has issues under 8.6.

i followed mac os help on trying to increase the memory allocation and it told me this: to open the general information on the thing and choose memory from the submenu and press continue. what the hell is the submenu, because i don't see it anywhere.

                        any help would be appreciated.

what you need to do is
                          1) select the installer program
2a) from the menu bar, slect File->Get Info->Memory
                          or
2b) type apple-I and select Memory from the popup-menu in the info box. The popup menu has the word "show" in front of it.
                          3) look at the value in the text box labled prefered size and add a few thousand to the value. (I tend to increment the value in units of 1024 myself)

                          Does this help?
