which is better... SMAC with Virtual PC 4.0 on OS X or SMAC for Mac on OS X (and does it have to run in just classic?)
I have SMAC for Windows because I was impatient... I'm wanting to play multiplayer with my iBook and friends though via airport so I need to get the mac version... but I'm not getting the Mac version happily unless it's been carbonized...
Thanks...
I look forward to challenging some PBEM's soon...

Okay, here's the news, but none of it good. The mac version of SMAC needs to run in classic, but I recomend you go with the Mac version. Virtual PC is hardly fast and is most likely too slow for a game like smac. I do have Virtual PC and soon maybe even tomorow I will try to download the Windows SMAC demo and check out the speed.

Sorry for the delay. I can't get the demo to work; because, it keeps hanging on the first screen with the Firaxis logo.
Bad news for you, but you realy should buy the mac version. You can also get the Crossfire expantion while your at it. Follow the link in my post above.
Whatever you do, good luck.

Thanks.
Just as an update, I've been using the SMAC Planetary Pack on Virtual PC 3.0 for about a year now, I've just gotten tired of it though, so I'm finally going to move up to a legit Mac version of SMAC and AC once they arive in the mail.
SMAC works great, at least the full version, but after a while into the game it gets processor heavy and the initial load time is bothersome too.
Thanks again though. I can see myself soon challenging a PBEM game.

And just when I least expect it... (I was expecting it next week) I got it in the mail just now... so I'll try watching this forum more often for the next PBEM game... I've also already downloaded the updates, though I need to wait until I'm done with work until I start installing.

Wow! that's great. I would look forward to a game with you. I'm sure the other PBEMers would be glad also.
I don't know how many of them are on the forums right now. The server has been slow lately and has chased most of the users away. Hopefully they'll come back soon.

I'm looking forward to it!
*nods* I've noticed a little sluggishness... I thought it was normal. After playing so long on a emulated Windows I know I'm going to be surprised about the speed difference.

Yep, sluggish it is compared to windows...but not on OSX/Carbon. There is a version out there, I hope it is getting released soon! It is FAAAST
I've posted a beta Carbon version to my iDisk - "boliver". It should be just what you need. Make sure to read the release notes as there are some gotchas.
