  • PC csg files to Mac problems

I am hoping to enrol in a couple of mainly PC run PBeM games. I have been sent some CSG files generated on a PC.

When i "download" them, there is no traditional CTP icon, just a blank page. I double click it and it wont open.

I try the "File Exchange" option. Select CSG and select CTP as the application. I select CTPd as the "file type" though i have tried the two others (that have the icon for the save game).

Am i doing something wrong, because it ain't working? Has anyone else had this problem?

    Cheers!

Now that'd be excellent. I am sending you the file now.

Well you might want to try dragging and droping the file onto the civ call to power app.

I got the file. I'll work on getting a file typer set up tonight when I get home from work.

Well TheThirdJesus i tried that and it didn't want to know. However my perseverance with the file exchange paid off.

I must have kept trying and not restarted the system or something. When i retried the same file only this evening it worked.

However a file typer could be most useful.

GUIDE LINES FOR SETTING FILE EXCHANGE
(For anyone with the same probs)

Go to control panels, file exchange. Add a new PC Translation with the following settings:

            PC Extension = CSG
            Application = Civilisation-Call to Power
            File Type = CTPg

I just sent Baston the PC to Mac PBeM file typer. All you have to do is drag the PC .csg file onto it and it will be converted to the Mac format. Hopefully he will get it posted to the web site soon.

Sounds like we need a file typer. I can set one up and email it to you tonight. It might be a good thing to post on the webpage too. I will need you to email a PC .csg to test it with.

Hmm do you need to do something like that for Vice Versa? You know for loading a Mac Ctp file on to Windos machine? Is there a file typer which will change it to PC type?

I'd be interested to see how this developes, if its even possible.

When received by a pc - despite being "unopenable" does the filename and icon not look like gibberish?

I'm not sure. I know that the PC file structure does not have a resource fork. This is the main difference between Mac and PC files. If there was a way to strip the resource fork off of the file while keeping the integrity of the data portion of the file intact...maybe. Have you had problems trying to open Mac -> PC saved games?

I asked a former Mac database(Foxpro) programmer he said that Mac files also contain something called creator code, I believe that is what CTPg is. He also said that I might be able to remove this using Resedit? Is that a standard utility on a Mac?

One more thing he said that the resource fork is pretty much contained seperately from the data part of the code. In most of the programs.

Hmmm... sounds promising. I'll have a look now.

I have found the resedit program and a good deal of source -- i'll have a knock around with it tonight / tomorrow morning.

I dont want to hold you guys any more - detach me and i will rejoin only when this problem is fixed.

                              Still drop me.
