I stopped playing civ a couple months ago because of one annoying problem. One of my favorite tricks is to assign all my military units to the city with Shakespeares theatre- noone gets unhappy during democracy, and I just buy any improvements for that city. So, one turn I have 50 units or so assigned, and the next they're all gone! This usually happens around 1960 or so. Hours of "work" down the tube. This is NOT caused by an inability to support the troops or anything like that. Is this a bug , a memory problem, or what? Thanks for any advice, I am so stoked I finally found a Civ site!

I can't think of anything in the game that would cause this short of an extremely well placed nuke.Since you say it happens at about the same time each game it sounds like a major bug you got there.
I have also have used Shake's for military purposes under Democracy and have never(fortunately) experienced that
Is the rest of your civ unaffected? The only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

Interesting strategy! I'm going to try it and report back....

The glitches get weirder and weirder, don't they? I was playing with another Mac mate the other night and one of his size 1 cities disappeared. He didn't build a settler and disband the thing, it just disappeared off the face of the earth.
That, and, in an earlier game, rush building a settler in a city only to finish up with a horseman of mine in its place in the city. And I didn't have a horseman anywhere near any of his cities ...
Actually, this last phemomenon also happened to Deity (a PC player) last week. He sent me a save of the game and there it was ... a Sioux chariot parked in his German city. He (and I) couldn't move it, only disband it or fortify it. Very peculiar. With the saved game he sent me, I activated the game with the AI playing the Sioux. The chariot popped out of the city, demanded a meeting, and when I refused ... the chariot demolished the city.
Ah life and its mysteries.

Yes, I've seen some weird glitches where small cities disappeared also. I've also seen units disappear when they've entered certain cities. I wonder if any of these bugs were cleared up with Civ 2 gold, which I don't own yet. I picked up CTP and was not impressed- good for a couple nights play but now I want to go back and play Civ 2.

The immediately above all happened in MultiPlayer games.

Not to change the topic, but how you you support 50 units in one city? Seems kinda hard even with King R's Crusade.

early..you don't .later you do.if you want to use Shake's for military then build it in a potentially high sheild site.Lots of hills and forest. After factories etc you should have no prob producing 70-100 sheilds in that city.Units from other cities are funneled thru and re supportedThe only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

So to sum it up it seems like these types of problems occur in both Civ 2 and Civ gold.
I'm just wondering if anyone heard of any "fixes"; I'm also wondering if any bugs were fixed in Civ gold or if they merely added multi play and that was it. Because I'm debating getting Civ gold. I've always looked forward to playing Civ multiplayer but to be honest I can't imagine how it works- I mean, don't games take weeks, months to play? When I play a solo game of Civ 2, if I put in 3-4 hours a night, that game can last for a couple weeks. How do you schedule it all? Do you get an e-mail when the player before you is finished and it's your turn? How long can you take during your turn?

What you have experienced is not normal but weird things happen from time to time.
I would buy MGE.There is a patch and it is cheap right now.The added intricacies that humans opponents bring to the game is well worth it.Plus the FW scenario editor is top notch>>>warning<<<
Turns can be long. There is a timer that can be set from 30secs to no limit. But I won't play unless there is no limit. You need it when tech problems arise. If you lose connection and the ai is allowed to "take over" it will screw up your civ royally.Units sent all over, major disorder, wonders abandoned etc...BAD SCENE.
Complete games are very rare. They usually get abandoned well before the finish line. This is because of logistics and often players get discouraged when other civs do well."hogging" all the wonders
Players use ICQ to arrange games and continue times. There is an in game chat feature also.
There is musical herald when your turn comes up as well as a pop up window that says"it is our turn to move.Use this time wisely".You just move units on your turn. All other aspects of civ can be done on other players turns.
It is not a fast paced game. Some players take longer than others. Some situations require more time. And, sadly, lag can also be a factor.
A 2 player "duel" can be played in a couple hours.Or a 6 player game can take 6+months to finish.Thats more a matter of how soon and how often you resume.
To sum up:
Multiplayer is the king of civ(imo) even with the odd glitch.Working a true alliance is great fun.Not the ai crap but real allies......and foes.Humans can fight effectively. The ai can't.So it can be tense at times.
if you want a fast paced bang bang type game then this isn't it.If you want a game of long term strategy, diplomacy, commerce and war then this is it.
this is more like chess than checkers
not to mention the characters you meet and play with.I've had games where I did more laughing than anything else

Couldn't agree more. Particularly with the latter. It's worth the price of the game alone.

Smash! What a GREAT post! This is easily the best short-discription of MP I've read and pushes me a bit closer to posting a FAQ! I've been thinking lately that the Mac webpage is rather irrelevant and I've been wondering what would be a better used of the space. I have thought that an FAQ extracted from the good advice in the Forums might fit the bill (with appropriate credit, of course!). Any thoughts?
BTW, I also couldn't agree more with what Smash wrote! I think that I enjoy the King's Chat and the multinational experience as much as the game itself! Which is a good thing considering the skill I've been demonstrating lately!

The Mac page is far from irrelevant, MU. It's a necessary (and muchly appreciated) alternative. An FAQ would be a useful addition. Give me an idea of the sort of things you want and I'll make a start if you like.
