It's because of all that fine work you do for the Cub movement, MacUser. Somewhere out in the ether there's a Computer Deity (no, not the one with whom we play Civ) who looks down from on high and decides who should be rewarded and who shouldn't. Clearly my complete ignorance of tykes and toggles (if they still have such things) and, arguably, complete antipathy towards tykes in general of any description in any way, shape or form has earned me the wrath of the Computer Deity.

    Serves me right.

LOL! Well you ought to get SOME credit for picking up my slack answering questions!

BTW: our the theme for last Monday nights Pack meeting was Cub Grub (US western slang for food ) and I dressed as a chef "Chef-Boy-r-C" (C for Cub Scouts) and had fun "cooking" in character! Tell you more later... time to go to work!

To sum up: the Cubs sang songs like "Road-kill stew," made "grub" like fudge in a "Zip-Lock" plastic bag and "Bugs on a Log" (peanut butter on celery with raisins) and played a "Crummy" game with crackers. I gave out awards using a monolog on the "recipe" for building a Cub Scout. It was a lot of fun! Be sure to tell THE DIETY about our Cub Grub!

The trick is (as smash said) to make the document into a text file. When you choose to download a document; and a whole load of jibberish comes up; then all you've got to do is save it as a text file, and decompress. In netscape (it'll probably work with other browsers, but I never tried), go under the file menu, and choose 'save as'. You then decompress this file with a standard decompresser that can handle this kind of file. Stuffit Expander for the Mac can handle almost everything (or at least v.5.5 can). What I do (using netscape v.4.7 and stuffit expander v.5.5), is to wait until the file stops downloading to netscape, and save it to my hard disk. I then drag the netscape text file into the Sutffit Expandter icon, and it decompresses.

        Hope this helps someone.

My problem generally is not one of rubbish but rather connecting and STARTING the download. Frequently, I try to start a download it get a progress window that displays something like "Transferring document (0 of 2097152 bytes)..." and there it will sit for hours! (literally, I have left it sit overnight on several occasions!) My problem doesn't seem to be traffic related, as I would imagine that eventually the light would turn green and the file would start.

I think that I have cussed AOL so often and so publicly that they are exacting revenge by sending vast amount of porn spam and blocking downloads! (I think I'm teasing, maybe...)

Is this the only site where you have that problem, MacUser?

              MacUser:
How fast is your modem? 2MB is a lot, but it shouldn't take all night. When you come back the next morning, has the bar moved at all, and is your Internet connection still open, or has it closed?

Fin: No, this happen sporadically elsewhere too. I have been able to download scenarios and modpacks here, the patch from MacSoft, junk from Apple and others...and then sometime NOTHING!

ada.: My connection is 28.8, but the real problem is that the download never begins. I start at 0, and in the morning is it STILL zero.

Depends. Sometimes the internet connection is still active, but no progress has been made on the file. Other time the progress window has closed, but the website window is still open and active. I have never have AOL shutdown because I have a shareware program (Always OnLine) that answeres the AOL "would you like for us to kick you off-line now?" messages.
