  • FINALLY! An Updated Mac Webpage!

It finally happened! I've learned enough to successfully post an update to the Mac webpage! Really nothing new, just an intro on the main page and an update the bugs page with patch info. This initial effort was mostly a ftp test, but there is much more to come!

So, seriously, what can we put on our page that is useful and distinctly Mac? Valmont is about to dazzle us with a new scenario and I have chatted with MarkG about locating all the Mac Civ MODs (maps and scenarios) to one central page on the Mac webpage. What else? Changes are afoot, be a part of it!

What's the address? Or doesn't it exist in those terms yet?

And if you need a hand with anything, sing out.

A specialist mac site or section for scenarios and modpacks would be extremely welcome. The only one I've found recently is "Nemesis", a French site (with an English version), but the scenarios seem to need conversion (?!) and one ("Rise of Rome") comes down as a RealPlayer document, but won't open. It can be very frustrating searching for mac + civ2 as most search engines don't seem to be capable of holding these two thoughts in their heads simultaneously and you have to trawl through all the PC stuff to get to where you want to be. So yes please - a central mac archive so we all know where to get the goods.

I've spent a pretty fruitless couple of days downloading and attempting to convert some interesting looking scenarios - "Colonies" and "Napoleon" in particular, which I think are by the same person, "Mare Nostrum" (which won't even unstuff) and "Gangsters", which appears to be pre-converted, but won't open as Civ says it's not a saved game. If anyone has working mac versions my gratitude will be boundless and you may just save my mac from a severe thrashing. At times like these I'm almost tempted to go over to the dark side and get a PC.

I've read and followed to the letter Amandeep Jawa's conversion instructions but ended up with graphics that included the background colours from the PICT file - not very attractive and completely unplayable. Other sources assure me that there's no need to convert anything but the sound and graphics, which doesn't seem right to me. Got very excited when I downloaded Lucky's "Civ2Filter2", which looks extremely impressive but doesn't seem to produce any better results. Clearly I must be a simpleton - or perhaps different files need different treatment. Can anyone provide a definitive idiots' guide?

In return I can offer a number of scenarios which do work - some more interesting than others - which I've collected from various sources over the last few years. List follows:

1640 USA, 1861 USA, 20th century, 3 mill (20th century again), 4 sea republics, Africa (x2), Alexander (x2), Arthur, Asia (x2), Battle, Blitz, Bolivar, Civil War (late 20th C USA), Europe, Gettysburg, Holyland, Joan of Arc, Middle East, Pacific, Pearl Harbour, Russian Revolution, Swiss, WW2, WW1.

          Any takers?

Welcome to our Forum! Yes, I am most interested in posting your scenarios! I am a novice at managing websites so it tends to be a "get-around-to-it" kind of project. Do try and e-mail me with scenarios that you would like to post. (Be persistent, AOL tend to corrupt e-mail file attachments!) I'll give them a test drive and then post them on the ACS Mac site.

As for the problems with playing the scenarios, what version of Civ are you using? I recently bought the MacSoft "Mac Strategy Pack" which contains the original Civ II. I'll tying playing Gangster on the original Civ II to see if there are problems. I think that Valmont used MPG to design it, and I seem to think that Civ II can't play a MPG scenario. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!) Hope to hear from you soon.

E the R: bad news (well, at least no good news yet) I tried to perform the old DOS "remark-out" a file by typing "rem" infront of all the Support files (unit.pict, game.txt, ect) and replaced them with the respective Gangster files. The only file that I could not shuffle was the Gangster Events.txt file which is unique to MPG. I think that this is the big problem with trying to play MPG scenarios on CivII original: text files such as Game.txt are written differently and CivII didn't use an Events.txt file.

If I hear differently, I'll post the instructions.

Now for the good news: the price of CivII MPG is dropping significantly! If you are into playing scenarios, you really need to go get a copy of MPG! The price on the MacSoft site for MPG has dropped to $19.99 (US) and the original CivII is $9.99! Hopefully, local retailers will soon follow suit. MPG contains something like 40 very creative scenarios and easy support for user created scenarios such as Gangster and The War to End All Wars.
