Game Log: EGYPT

Everyone:

When I play Civ II, I keep an ongoing "diary/log" of sorts that details the events of the game as it unfolds. Obviously, they're more detailed when I have MPE or the UN. Anyway, in an attempt to generate Civ-related discussion in this forum, I've posted the log as it stands now for your perusal.

If it bores you to tears, tough.

4000 BC: The legendary Emperor Anwar Sadat unites the quarreling people of his valley into a new nation known as EGYPT. Our first city and capital is THEBES, and it is blessed with rivers, grasslands, plains, whaling and deserts.
2000 BC: Settlers establish the seaport city of MEMPHIS.
0900 BC: The blood descendents of Emperor Anwar Sadat step down from power, and an era of instability is ushered in across all of EGYPT.
0850 BC: A monarchy comes to power in THEBES, and order is restored across all of EGYPT.
0675 BC: ///EGYPT builds the Colossus in THEBES./// This mighty statue stimulates our people, and soon we see additional tax revenue from increased trade and a burst of creativity from our knowledge-seekers.
0525 BC: (((EGYPT and the AMAZONS sign a peace treaty.))) This first-contact situation turned out well in the end, despite an "icy" beginning that saw us giving them the knowledge of pottery with nothing in return. Nonetheless, more equitable trades followed, and we have "receptive" relations with the AMAZONS, who are, of all things, a female-dominated nation.
0275 BC: Settlers establish the seaport city of HELIOPOLIS.
0220 AD: The Golden Age of Philosophy begins in the EGYPTIAN capital, THEBES. Great thinkers articulate scientific, moral and metaphysical systems which endure for centuries to come.
0340 AD: Trade negotiations for knowledge and maps with the AMAZONS fall through. We were not interested in what they had for knowledge and they, in turn, refused to trade maps with us.
0640 AD: ///EGYPT builds Marco Polo's Embassy in THEBES./// We now have a facility in which to store the knowledge of foreign affairs we glean from others. This will benefit us greatly when it comes to negotiations with other nations.
0680 AD: Settlers establish the seaport city of ELEPHANTINE.

1565 AD: We trade knowledge and maps with our AMAZON allies, but refuse to rejoin their war with MONGOLIA. We have made an honorable peace, and we shall stick with it.
1575 AD: After fifteen years of strife, a republic is seated in THEBES and, for the first time in our nation's history, all of our people are truly represented. A new era of prosperity has dawned!
1590 AD: ^^^MONGOL armies capture the AMAZON city of EURIPPE.^^^
1595 AD: !!!MONGOLIA and CHINA cancel their peace treaty!!!
...We refuse to attack our allies, the AMAZONS, at MONGOLIA's request. They even have the balls to offer us 150 gold to join them in an alliance against our matriarchal neighbors!
1620 AD: We offer the AMAZONS military assistance, as they've been begging for our help, but the fools not only turn it down, but insult us in the process! Well! Screw you, too, ladies! Before that, they had the ovaries to demand 300 gold from us, to which we responded, "We're not your personal financiers!"

1883 AD: ***!!!***THE AMAZONS DESTROY MONGOLIA***!!!*** The fall of KARAKORUM wipes out the last of a once-aggressive people who bit off more than they could chew.

1898 AD: The AMAZONS once again ask us to join one of their wars, this time against JAPAN. We decline, and we also refuse to give 800 gold to finance their efforts against CHINA. We do, however, agree to exchange maps. This should give our female friends a slight edge on CHINA.

1963 AD: The venerable EGYPTIAN republic falls from power, and chaos sweeps the lands, cities and people of our mighty nation.
1965 AD: The chaos in EGYPT is swept aside as a fundamentalist regime rises to power in THEBES and asserts its grip on the nation. Supported by luminaries in the military, commercial and religous circles, the regime's leader, High Priest Sadat, claims direct blood ties to the legendary Emperor Sadat. Surprisingly, it's true.
...!!!EGYPT attacks the CELTS!!! It is but the first step in a plan for global dominance. The weakest shall fall first, and that turns out to be the CELTS. It helps our cause that they had once been antagonistic towards us.

1971 AD: The EGYPTIAN city of RHONDDA is disbanded; its citizens are forced to join engineering battalions that will improve our lands with irrigation, farmland, roads, railways and mining.
1988 AD: A CHINESE diplomat is captured red-handed with information on key technology. He is expelled and CHINA is put on notice that we won't put up with such shenanigans.
1992 AD: !!!The AMAZONS declare war on JAPAN!!!
1993 AD: We foil an espionage attempt by CHINA.
1994 AD: !!!EGYPT declares war on CHINA!!! We have had it with their espionage attempts. This time we caught them red-handed with really sensitive knowledge.
1995 AD: ^^^EGYPTIAN armies sack or destroy the following CHINESE cities: MACAO (destroyed), KWEISUI, XUZHOU, PAOTING, YANGCHOW (seaport), ANYANG (seaport), TATUNG, CHINAN, NANKING,
...^^^!!!EGYPTIAN armies sack CHINA's capital, CHENGDU!!!^^^ Among the spoils of war is Shakespeare's Theater and the Statue of Liberty.
...CHINA's government escapes to XINJIAN.
...^^^!!!EGYPTIAN armies sack CHINA's capital, XINJIAN!!!^^^ This time, we capture and execute the leaders of the enemy. CHINA has been decapitated.

How do you generate such logs? It'd be interesting to share mine sometime. (Though probably in Civ3 form so it might not be the same).

I type the logs up as the game progresses, usually in SimpleText. Then it's just a matter of copying and pasting to the forum. Civ II itself does nothing to generate the logs, unfortunately. It's up to the player to keep track of events.

But I have fun doing it — I try to turn it into a sort of story, rather than a strictly utilitarian listing of events.

I suppose there could be a CivII PBEM game set up here. I've honestly never done one.

Mac user only games, unfortunately, seem to have a tendency to die out. At least that's my experience with SMAC/SMAX.

I've been in too many pbems to count, but I've allways been the only mac user involved.

You're right though, I don't think we've got enough people to play a mac only pbem

I find it's easier to write things down. That way, if the Amazons piss me off in 1994 AD, I can justify my war of conquest on them by pointing to, say, 1004 AD, when they killed an innocent settler family — a husband, a wife, and three little children.

Sounds much different from me... I just like to be alone on the island that I start in.

All my recent play experiance is in CivIII, but so much still applies that it's not even funny.

After I clear off my island, I go for the weakest. Right now the only thing keeping me from attacking anybody is because of the new feature in CivIII with the mutual defense pacts and my military in the wrong place to invade anybody else.

See the Civ2 succession games (General/Help forum) for ongoing use of logs to keep a group game going.

There's usually 8-10 players in a given game. I'm usually the only Mac guy, but the same is true in MP. Neither is really a problem.

It was such a shame that it didn't stick around in Civ3. I loved that wonder, especially for the excuse to crusade against a neighbor.

Well, if you're going to build King Richard's Crusade, then doesn't it make sense to carry out a crusade or two afterwards? Say, against an annoying, small foe who has a tantalizing city or two?
