  • Is anybody actually playing this game?

This forum appears to be near to death.
Is anybody actually (still) playing this game?

    I am, it's still great.
We should discuss strategies more often online!
    but is anybody out there?

I still play from time to time with my friends, but there are few opportunities to do so because it takes so long to play.

I play it sometimes, but like civman I can't play it too often because it takes quite a while to finish.

Yes - its called "Advanced Civillisation" and its freeware, IIRC. Get it from the usual suspects for these semi-legal kinda things.

I have a good reason (unfortunately) why I don't play it right now: I can't find the game. I mean, my only chance is to order from USA.

Here in the Netherlands it can be bought by alterative stores, like "Elf".
They sell games like "Magic - The Gathering" and the sword of Aragorn (the real one )

Actually, that's the original board game.

They made a new one not too long ago, which is what this forum was created for (though I guess it could be used to discuss the original game as well).

I think Civ is the only game ever to have gone from board game to PC game (or rather, a whole series of PC games) and back to board game again

We probably should broaden this forum to all Boardgames, instead of just the Civ one.

Is there a difference between the old and new versions of the board game ? (apart from the obvious cosmetic ones) I assumed the new version was the same as the old one?

                  BTW Sten - excellent suggestion

Well, when they made a computer game out of the board game, they changed quite a few things (for one thing, the board game was much less focused on combat). The new board game is supposed to be a restyled version of the PC game (a mix of Civ1 through Civ3 I believe, though more Civ3 than Civ1), not the original board game. In fact, IIRC the creator of the game said he's never played the original board game.

In case you want a more detailed comparison between the game, here's a link on Advanced Civilization, the PC version of the board game (one that did remain true to the original):

And here's a link on the new board game:

we are playing civ3 boardgame from time to time...it is great, though a bit long. we stopped playing advanced civ coz it is devilishly hard to get guys together. they have children, wives, jobs and it takes 12 hours and 7 people to play this properly

I always play the advanced version with 6 guys (including me) (LaRusso, why do you need 7? there's only place for 6)

it takes us 7-10 hours to play.
Of course the first times it took us longer, but now we're getting used to the rules it quickens up.

I have a poule of 11 people to play with, which is a kind of a problem, because they all want to play it every time, it's about making choises.

But since it's hard to find a day in which we all can spend 10 hours, we don't play it that often.
                          Mostly sunday afternoon.

Sunday 18th will be our next game!
                          I'm looking forward to it!

I wish I had 11 people! Right now my pool is two people not including myself, and during the school year one of them is only available for the time needed to play about once every 6 weeks, and often it's on a day one of the other two of us is busy!
