Just thought of this; in the editor on the units page there's a box under AI strategies that tells the AI which task this unit would be better for. Spearman has "Defense" checked while Swordsman & Horseman have "Offense" checked.
Overworked and underpaid C/LTJG in the NJROTC
If you try to fail and succeed which have you done?
If fail to plan, then you plan to fail

... And you can also specify that the AI "often" or "never" build units of tehse types ...
... And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare, the lone and level sands stretch far away ...

These flags are used only to inform the AI how to use selected unit. They are not supposed to make that unit better in such situation.

You've got the point! That's exactly what I'm complaining about.

          Anyone noticed the UNUSED flag?

I think that flag are shared by all types of horse unit (except Charriots)

Anyone care to take a look at it?

UNUSED flag exists in Civ3Edit, but in Civ3XEdit, which comes with PTW, it's replaced with Flag Unit.

Anyway, I wouldn't know how to use UNUSED flag. How to change that flag to make it useful? If I could do that, then I could alternate other flags too.

            I believe that's impossible.

Oops, I thought that UNUSED is for mounted units.
              Guess I'm wrong then.
I have got PTW yet so....

It's "reserved for future use". Just a hook for future code and/or table entries.

As far as I know, the UNUSED flag was called "Mounted" in earlier versions of Civ 3, but it had no gameplay effect.
The difference between industrial society and information society:
In an industrial society you take a shower when you have come home from work.
In an information society you take a shower before leaving for work.

Ah -- this might then be a remnant from the Civ 2 ability to have certain units (e.g., pikemen) have improved defenses against charging cavalry -- which only makes sense ...

Make a zero movement unit with no attack and whatever defense seems appropriate. Give it the airdrop flag and, just for fun, the inivisible flag.

Well, that could help, but I expect minefields to be build by workers, like some sort of tile improvement.

That would probably require the ability to make new terrain types, which we don't have.

I wish we did; my dream of swampland would come true.
