De Bellis Multitudinis ( written by Phil Barker & Richard Bodley Scott ) DBM website
is one of the most popular set of rules for table wargaming, used all along the word to re-fight battles from 4000 bc to 1500 ad .
The system offer more than 400 army lists (from Hittite to Burgundian )
...and a budget poit system to allow buying troops.
This system use a unique troops type classification system valid for all the various historical age, that could be useful , i guess, for historical CIV scenario design :
Here it is a brief summary of the system :
(unit TYPE, combat factor vs INFANTRY / vs CAVALRY / SPEED m )
Elephant - as cartaghinians : 5 / 4 / 3m
Knight - from cataphract to medieval knight : 4 / 3/ 3m
Cavalry : 3 / 3 / 4m
Light cavalry : 2 / 2 / 5m
Sacrifiables - like chariot with blades : 4 / 4 / 4m
Spearmen - from spartiate to francs : 4 / 4 / 2m
Pikes - form macedonian to swiss pikeman : 4 / 3 / 2m
Blades - legionaries, etc. : 5 / 3 / 2m
Warband - barbarians , celts, etc. : 3 / 2 / 3m
Auxiliairy - i.e. macedonian pelstats : 3 / 2 / 3m
Bowman : 2 / 4 / 2m
Psiloi - light skirmishing troops : 2 / 2 / 3m
Hordes - mass of poor quality troops : 2 / 2 / 2m
Artillery - from catapult to early cannons : 4 / 4 / 1m
.. in the DBM system each unit/army could also be regular / irregular , and each troop type could be
S - superior , O- ordinary, I - inferior , F - fast, X- special
giving extra customization , and varing a little bit unit factors
( i.e. fast-warband .. have 1 movement point added )
As you know.. in DBM unit combat value are given
as combat factor: vs INFANTRY / vs CAVALRY ....
in CIV we got ATTACK / DEFENSE ...
but it will be an easy work to try to TRANSLATE this value in CIV style ...
having therefore the possibilities to set up Historical Armies for various civilization , with a common system ...
( and i guess it could also be possible to play historical wargame battle .. using CIV multiplayer , along with DBM unit system ...)
If anybody is interested in this experimentation .... i'll be glad to share ideas and suggestion ... and to post some army list
