  • Installation/Startup problem

I've re-installed* CivIII on a computer (W98SE, PIII ~550Mhz, 96Meg Ram) and it seemed to install ok. However when I attempt to run the programme it comes up with the error message as attached.

    Any ideas?

*This game has previously run just fine on this computer (I think).

Well it's a long shot, but one possibility is that your hard drive is getting full. It looks like that's some sort of swap file, and if there's not enough room to create it...

    Other than that I haven't a clue.

There's still ~5Gb free space on the hard drive.

Obviously not the problem then, sorry. I'd suggest you contact Infogrames' tech support, I don't think anyone here will have an answer. It's the first time that problem's come up.

If you haven't defragmented the hard drive recently it would probably be worth uninstalling and doing so before trying the installation again.

Is that a shot in the dark?

I've been looking around the net and it appears to be a copy protection problem, if that helps in diagnosis. Apparently other people have reported the problem on Max Payne and Operation Flashpoint.

Not entirely, I have found it helpful with problems relating to temp files. However if it is copy protection related then that is a different situation. Sorry but I have no idea.

Well, I don't think that it installed right. Should be no temp files after install. Civ3 will be slow on that machine, and you may require to have a large Windows swap file (memory manager). I run my at the limit of about 1Gb.
