Quick question about Civ 3 / PTW Installation.....

I format my machine alot (beta testing apps and such). Most games are very well behaved when it comes to such, with the glaring execption of Civ 3 / PTW. I have to reinstall them both each format. I've tried installing on alternate hard drives (can't find files error), tweaking the INI files and whatnot.

Does anyone know how I can install Civ 3 / PTW on another hard drive and be able to continue playing after I format and reinstall Windows XP?

    Thanks in advance.

It seems to me that you're being overly picky. I have a seperate partition for my XP system files, and I see no need to be reformatting anything at all.

If that's what you're doing, then obviously you'll have to reinstall, since you're overwriting your registry each time. Most programs require a reference in that file, so every time you erase it, which you do by reformatting, you lose the paths to the programs.

I've been running XP for at least six months now, and I've never had a need to completely redo my system. Stop thinking in terms of 98, it's a much more stable OS!

      That's not the point....

What it is, is that I need to have clean installs to test some applications and how they relate to the OS (and at times I need a "dirty install" with a bunch of junk installed).

All I'm trying to do is limit the amount of stuff I have to install each time I re-format.

Oh well......99% of all the other games I play don't need any "special treatment"......

You may use some sort of a registry tracker (I use RegView Pro, http://www.regview.com/) to find out what entries are added to your registry when you install Civ3/PtW. It should be easy to export/separate these entries to a .REG file you would just import when your new system does not recognize the previous Civ3 install. It may take you a couple of minutes to create the .REG file, but then... it would be just a matter of seconds to get your Civ3/PtW install back...
