  • Unknown Crash During Turn Processing

Run the turn, game crashes part-way through the turn resolution. Prior to the 1.04f patch it would just hang. The game seems to crash\hang right after the Iriquois OR right during\after the German turn. Spy on the German's plans to see all their units moving. It seems that right after the last German unit moves, the game dumps to the desktop.

    This is the turn prior:

The curious thing is that if I run 1370 AD without touching anything or moving anything, the game still craps out in 1370. The ONLY thing I can think of is the production of the first fighters & bombers, and their rebasing ...

Does the game crash for anyone else ... ?

I've got some older files as well if anyone's interested.

For the record, the form response from IG Tech Support (reinstall, clean CD) was worthless. I've tried processing this turn on THREE different desktops and ONE laptop - and I tell ya, that was a pain installing CIV3 all over the place.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I think I have your answer

I loaded the 65 save (on accident, meant to the 70, but whatever)

Looking at the map, I instantly had my suspicions, and a few moves here and there proved it.

The problem with your game is you exceeded the maximum number of units.

You have like 450 units. and I think every other civ has a couple hundred.

Not sure, but I think the limit for units on the map is 2 or 3 thousand.

I've attached the save from 1375, you'll see that I deleted units to around 400 for you. I just deleted them as they came online, so there are weak places in your empire.

This is the first time I've seen this, While I ususally end with maybe 500 units, I've never seen the AI so strong at the end (and so many with all those units) But I had heard about this on some test maps.

Unfortunately, unlike the max city popup, there is no max unit popup. there obviously should be, as this is clearly a problem, albeit a rare one.

Does this help? If not, we can try something else.

      Ok

      2nd try

I was totally off on that first attempt, I made the mistake of thinking I knew the problem, but turns out the game played fine on my machine. Here is the save from 1380, not part of the same game posted above.

Do either of these games work for you?

The limits may still play a factor in the crash, what's your processor and ram?

I'll try them here shortly, thanks greatly for the help. I must admit I'm confused though. Here's why, specs on the three machines:

        1.2 GHz Athlon\256 MB RAM
        700 MHz Athlon\256 MB RAM
        P3 700 MHz Intel\256 MB RAM
        P3 something Intel\256 MB RAM

Those machines aren't exactly anemic ...

So you're saying if I play on a HUGE map with LOTS of AI, I should tone down the number of units in play ... ?

          Or kill them early

not sure what the problem is. ther is a unit maximum, but its pretty high.
tell me if those saves don't work, I will try something else. not sure what, but something.

Appears there's some problems with the zipn files; I was able to zipfix the 1st file, but zipfixing the second doesn't seem to help, can you maybe email them to me?

            Thanks

never heard of the max unit thing in civ3.

Maybe send a mail to Firaxis, describing your problem.

I thought I remembered hearing about a test back in the old days, when the editor was made semi functional, where they reached the limit.

I could be totally wrong though, wouldn't be the first time.
