I'll be honest with you: if you don't want to play Civ3 and you like Microsoft keeping tabs on you this much, stick with XP

          Try this

          Unistall

          Delete the Civ III folder

If you want to keep your present saves copy them to somewhere else, same for the highscore file

          Reinstall

          Install the 1.29 patch

Upgrading to XP without reinstalling the game can cause problems.

          If that doesn't work.

          Update you video drivers

          Update your sound drivers.

Upadate everything you can think of.

And yes you may have a Safedisk II problem in which case a newer CD player might take care of it. If you have a DVD player and CD burner try installing from whichever you didn't install it from.

When you uninstall, you should also delete the Installshield Information folder. That folder is hidden, so you'll need to enable show hidden folders in options for windows explorer.

I have to say - that's a pretty low system for XP. Windows XP requires a MINIMUM of 128 MB RAM, so you might want to think about upgrading to 256.

More like 512. I have 448 on mine, and my memory manager tells me that Civ III is still almost redlining my RAM. Just sitting doing nothing, XP can use up 256 meg.

And yes, pinball, you'll probably have to uninstall/reinstall the game. At least I did when I upgraded. Also make sure you have all the latest drivers for your gear.

Make sure you aren't using "Fast USer Switching"

In fact disable Fast USer Switching if you know what's good for you.

I had similar problems on XP and still do intermitently where the machine just powers down instantly, or pops up a error message like you described.

                  (1) I reinstalled civ3+patch
                  (2) updated my video and sound drivers
                  (3) sacrificed a goat on the alter of Bill Gates

and didn't have the problem anymore. much.
