    System as follows
    P4 2.4
    512 MB
    Asus P4T533 MB
    XP Pro with Service Pack 1
    ATI 8500 LE 128 MB AGP Video Card
    Creative Labs Audigy Gamer

    I've updated all the above with current drvs

    Ok so i'm hooked civ iii and every time i try to play the game it will run for several min and then crash and reboot back to windows..

    I've installed the lastest patch and still it crashes.

    Please anybody help

    Uninstall Civ III. Delete the Civ III folder to be sure its clean. Copy any saves to someplace safe if you want to use them.

    Reinstall. Then install the patch. This takes care of for most people. If it doesn't then you either have some kind of harware problem (bad memory for instance) or you don't really have the latest drivers.

    I don't think the service pack has caused any problems. If you messed with your memory and swap file settings that could bolix up the game if its bad enough.

    Most likely its a corrupted file OR you installed XP over a previous version of windows and that can mess up some programs. Civ III seems to be one of them. Its does not need to be in compatability mode.

      I had a very similar problem. Does it crash when you can into a diplomacy screen, or when music or sfx hang? Try turning music off. It worked wonders for me. Also, do the uninstall/reinstall as Ethelred said, and then install the patches in succesive order. That actually helped me out a bit.
