  • GRAPHIC: zulu9812's units_32.pcx icon sheet with 200+ icons!

I originally posted this over at CivFanatics. It;s gone through several versions and it's pretty complete. I'll keep updating this file as new units are made. Here is the readme:

IMPORTANT! Scroll down to the bottom to se the latest update to this readme!

The units_32.pcx file controls what pictures are shown for units in the build queue. Each new unit requires an icon be added to that file. This version of that file has added in excess of 100 icons for you to use

Extract the file to ...\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Art\Units and confirm overwrite. Backup the original file of you want.

The next version will be 1.1, the one after that 1.2, and so on. Besides, there was a dot after the 'v' in previous zips so I can just say that was 0.9, so there

and btw, I know this sort of thing is quite easy to do - it's just something I wished was available when I was starting out.

Thanks for the effort, I'll download it and look at it when I'm home. I'm starting on my 1.29 mod with a lot of civ-specific graphics, so I can use it now. Did you fiddle with your existing graphics program, or did you pick up another program?

I've started using Paintshop Pro, which is excellent. As you know, I'd tried using MS PhotoDraw ages ago but for some reason MS products under Windows 2000 (and maybe other versions of Windows as well) won't save the pallette properly.

Great as a source but it crashes my game.

I tried to use this file to replace my current pcx file. However it caused my game to crash later in the game. When I changed the file to a smaller pcx then the game was able to reload and resume but not until the pcx was replaced. I'm running a 1200Mhz Celeron with 256MB of ram.

the file works for me, and my pC's only 750MHz w/128 RAM. No one at CFC mentioned this. I'll look into it. Anyone else experienced any problems with the file size. To be honest, I think it's more likely that you're using a blank space for an icon. When exactly did the game crash? When you clicked on a unit in the build queue? Did the unit have an icon next to it in the build queue? When you were using my file, did you go into the editor and check that each unit was using an icon?

                  zulu,

the file must have 100+ icons... will this work in the game as is?

I assumed that the units.pcx file had to have X amount of icon squares, not more not less.

otherwise, nice job, this stuff is useful. If only it was easy to always keep it updated for everyone that uses it.

The size of the file doesn't make any difference, but the dimensions do - the height is irrelevent, but the width must be 14 sqaures (32 pixels each). As I say, I've had no problems with this file since v.4. If you already had a modded icon sheet, you'll need to rejig things in the editor so that the right icons are shown for any new units you've added, but the positioning of the original civ3 icons hasn't changed. So they stay the same. And don't worry, I'll keep updating the file as new units come out

zulu9812, with the latest patch you can make it wider, don't know how it works though.

Everybody, for units unavalable here you may have to go to CivFanatics (unless we can get them to post here).

                        Crashing.

Yes, it crashed when I clicked on the unit to add it to the build cue. I've used a blank icon for Greek fire when I was playtesting my mod and didn't have any problems. What circumstances should it crash with a blank icon?

try not using a blank icon and see if it crashes - the sheet does have a Greek Fire icon

Blank icon shouldn't be a problem.
I'm using blanks for a couple of units, and haven't experienced any problems. (the gfx program I have won't save the pink as transparent)

so you're saying I can have a big file with say 150 different icons, and I'll be able to choose them within the editor? What I mean by this, is that right now in the editor I can choose 84 different icons (0-83, several are blank). If I put in icon number 95 for example, the editor whines and says enter an integer between 0 and 83 (when it should really be enter an interger equal to or greater than 0 and equal to or less than 83 ). So with a bigger icon file I can put in more? As long as the icon file's width is according to firaxis standards?

About the update thing, I meant not from the creators, just some easy to use central thingie that can sense user created updates and remind you about it whenever. Would be nice
