  • Onward to AvP Mod.... BUT!

I've been working on an Aliens V. Predator mod for Civ3 for the past few months, and since I'm pretty much done with my Civ3 Latin mod, I want to return to work on this. I'm not good at textureing and animation, mostly because I lake the artisic skills and the software to do (I have Paint Shop Pro 6 and MS paint, good enough for me). With that in mind, I thought that I would try to work the gameplay and balance the three "civs" or species out before I request texture and animation help.

So, I went on to use the units that are already in civ3, rename X number of them and delete the rest, sounds like a plan. So I do that. I also make sure each unit can be built by only their rightful species, I don't want to see Aliens drones fighting along side smartgunners .

Well, now here is the problem. Civ3 don't like that. Apprantly, the game only allows units with "Golden Age" option to be able to be built by one civ, even if I say otherwise in the "Available To" box. Here are things I've tried to fix this, and how they didn't work

1: The Available To box - Still won't work
2: Using resources to force a species to build that unit - Game hangs at ~25% loading
3: Applying Golden Age to all units - Game crashes

I'm at a lose here, and need help if I want to be able to test my settings... if this game engine can handle it.

For those who would like to see it, I've attached it for you. Please note you will need to change the unit names if you want to play test it. Please note this is NOT a full mod, and I do not wish it to goto the files section.

    EDIT: See download below

I haven't encountered this problem before. I've done plenty of mods giving unique units to civs without giving them the Causes Golden Age ability. Maybe there's a problem with your editor or the .bic file. Have you tried uninstalling, reinstalling them applying the 1.29f patch?

Yes. I did a complete uninstall (delete the folder, check the registry), then install it, and apply the 1.29f patch and even doing the same but apply each and every patch in crono. order. No deal. Do you have any problems with my bic file?

        I'm going nuts here!!!!

I've tried from scratch 5 times and still get the same problem. I have uploaded the bic file above, tell me what I'm doing wrong!

The Alien Queen will be a problem; you can’t give an air attribute to a land unit. The Elite Elder has three AI land strategies; you are only allowed two. Settler is not allowed to anyone and you have the mod set for all civs to build often. Why did you check build never for GW and SW when there aren’t any? So when you can get it to run does it go from bronze working right to future tech 1? (Methinks you have removed too much!)

The rules editor (at least mine did) has problems just working with your bic. The tabs kept disappearing when clicked. (I got it down to only five tabs showing, a new record!) This in my experience is the editor’s way of telling you there is a problem. Try removing your alterations one or two at a time, I’d start with restoring the buildings and the tech tree, and then play test. You should also try waiting out that 25% hang on load, some scenarios take a while for the game to set up (up to 3 min. or more) although I got a crash to the desktop at 100% load.

Well I tried everything you asked, and still nothing. I don't want Techs so I reduced it to just bronze because having none means the game crashes.

There is still no way I cang get the units to work right.

Now the problem is obvious (I hope.) You renamed some units, maybe you took care of this on your machine but you did not include the new or renamed units with your bic.

Going on the assumption that you haven't, you will need to go into the CivIII\Art\Units folder and do a little work. (The game crashed on the "Queen" unit so I will use that as an example.) Make a temp folder in this directory, make a copy of the Mech Infantry folder in the temp folder. Rename it Queen. Open the folder, then rename the ini file "Queen.ini". Cut and paste the new folder back into the Art/Units folder. You need to do this for every unit you renamed using the correct unit files for the icon you have selected.

If you have already done this, sorry I don't know what is wrong.

Umm, I didn't add them because you can rename the units on your own. I'm not going to waist Poly server space and if you read above I didn't make any artwork yet. I just took the units in civ3, rename them (I did the folders, I'm not that stupid ) so I can test gameplay.

Sorry, wasn't suggesting you were stupid but I had to make sure you knew about it.

Try removing all of the units except the worker and settler and save as a new file. Then start adding your units one at a time to new file until you find the one that messes up. I know you didn't want to hear that but it's the only way you will find out for sure.

Strange, considering I'm using the units that are came with the game.

I'm officialy killing this mod. I think there is a problem with the editor. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game many times this morning, and nothing will work. Even some of the mods I downloaded don't work right. The game just likes to be able to build every unit no matter what once you touch the units.

If anyone wants to do an AvP mod then give a shout, I'll send you a basic outline.

I had downloaded this and just got a chance to check it the problem may be on the genral tab all starting units are set to none witch may work if you place the starting units on the map but won't if you don't.

BTW you can have a folder with just the INI in it and have it point to other units like this ..\Unit\UnitAnimation, it takes varry little space.

                          Thank you!

He had three units in each city, a worker and an offensive unit - although the alien was checked for offense and defense but I don't see that causing a problem with 1.29.
