  • Question about Great Leader, Armies

When I get a GL and I move it into a city to, say, rush build the Great Library, I get a message saying "cannot rush build Great Library". Is this a bug, or what am I doing wrong?

How do I create an Army shell so I can load units into it? I tried using a GL, but I can't build an Army. I am missing something simple that is apparent to everyone else.

You don't use the Hurry production button in the city screen, you have to give the Leader itself an order to both hurry production, Ctrl-H I believe, and build an Army. I forget what the keyborad shortcut for that is, just look at the buttons at the bottom when your Leader is active.

I think the hotkey is Ctrl-H

Look at the command buttons at the bottom of the screen when your leader is active in the city. You should see two new buttons. One is for Build Army and the other is for Hurry Improvement. Click one to have the leader perform that task.

Be sure that you change the city's build order to the desired item before you have the leader Hurry Improvement, because the leader will simply complete whatever the city is working on (it will now be finished in one turn). Also, note that once you move an army out of the city it was created in, you will no longer be able to load units into it.

That's not true. You can load units into an Army anywhere you want to just by hitting the "L" key when they're on the same square. They don't even have to be in a city.

Really? I never actually tried, but I thought for sure that I read somewhere that once you move an army out of the city it was built in, you can't load units into it.

            Maybe it's a bug?

And does that mean that once I build the Pentagon, I can load modern units into my ancient armies? That would be a big help, since units in armies can't upgrade.

I never load my units within a city, I always stack the units I want to put into the Army just outside the city that's building it. When it's done, I move it to where the units are, and load them there. I've never had a problem with this approach.

Thanks for all the great tips. I haven't tried any of it yet, but I will.

Also, remember that using the Great Leader can complete any Wonder in the one turn. So, if you can move him to a city that just completed something else, then you don't lose all the shields that were already put to the project; not always possible, I know.

                    military academy

In a similar vein - how do you create an army without a leader in a city with the military academy?

I assumed that there would be an area next to the city name, like there is with the intelligence agency, but no. I tried control-clicking on the city, I tried opening the city to see if there was somewhere on the city screen to do it (I even tried clicking and double-clicking on the military academy in the city screen). Mmm - didn't try clicking on the academy in the city view; surely that can't be it?

I had one army at the time (and tried moving it in and out of the city, in case it made a difference), and about 20 cities.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the book or the civilopaedia. Can anyone help?

                      Military Academy part two!

Sorry about that - the answer was too simple! Army appears as one of the possible units to build.

It should just appear in your build list, like a regular unit. If not, you have a bug in your program, and should probably uninstall/reinstall. Since you only had one, you wouldn't have reached your limit, which is one Army for every four cities.

I want to let you know that everything works out. It's funny how I use the buttons for everything I do, EXCEPT for when it comes to the Great Leader.

When I created an army 'shell', I moved it to where my main battle was, and loaded my units into it. I haven't tried it, but is there a way to unload my units later on in the game? It would be nice to be able to upgrade my army to more modern units when I discover the newer technology.

I wonder if the army can generate a GL?

I moved my army 'shell' to my main battle field, because my war was raging on another continent, and I find that triremes will only load the shell if I have at most one loaded unit.

I found it frustrating that even though horsemen have 2 movement points, that when they are loaded into the army unit, the army unit has only one movement point.

....Also make sure you haven't previously rushed something smaller in that queue; if there are any "rushed shields in the box, it won't let you...
