I have a new unit idea. I'm not sure if there's anyway to make it, but how about a gunboat? It'd be worse than a frigate, but much cheaper. And the unique part of the unit is it can travel only on rivers and coast squares.

You see, the use of rivers is totally downplayed in this game. Just look at how important rivers were in the war between the states? I'm not sure if there is a way to make this, so please tell if there is.

And if there is a way, maybe some sort of river transport would be good to make, too.
"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

doesn't the Frigate predate the Gunboat? Or is it just in Empire Earth that the Gunboat is made of metal?

Yes, I think Frigates predate Gunboats. If I'm not mistaken, Gunboats are steam driven ships.

          That is a fascinating Idea.

If anyone can make it work, please do!

I can see the scenario culture will be as rich in civ3 as in II. Thank you Firaxis!

You can't use ships on Rivers, it's considered a Land square. And there's no way to allow a land unit to only travel on rivers. Or any particular terrain for that matter. The only option available is the Wheeled flag, that won't allow movement on Jungles and Mountains.

Obviously johncmcleod, this unit would be a pattlewhealer. Are you going to have a large pattlewhealer on the aft of the boat (Like the mississippi riverboats) or side mounted pattlewheals (Both pattlewheals on the sides of the ship) ?

There is a graphic over at Civ Fanatics called the "Ironclad Ram", or just "Ironram" that looks very much like a Gunboat. That is the graphic I'm going to use for Gunboats in my Civil War scenario.

The only way for ships to navigate 'rivers' is to make them 1-tile wide coasts going into land. That's what I did on my Eastern US map to allow for a more realistic scenario involving the Mississippi campaign.

Sailing on rivers is impossible, but you could always make a coast-only boat. The Ironclads were almost useless on the high seas.
The difference between industrial society and information society:
In an industrial society you take a shower when you have come home from work.
In an information society you take a shower before leaving for work.
