I tried pressing J to no avail. Do I need to select the units or highlight them in some special way? I have them all together on one tile next to a city, but they only seem to want to attack one by one. Most perplexing.

No, just tried that. Doesn't move different types of units. 'J' will move all of the same type of unit just like G moves one unit. But I haven't found anything for mixed unit type stacks. Did CivII have that capability?
