You can play my map of Europe. Nice fertile land, and resources as far as the eye can see. That way, you're fighting the other civs, not the map.

Wouldn't it be nice if the setup offered a choice of starting tiles? That way those who want a challenge could start on a desert or jungle tile, others could begin on fertile terrain, etc. Random starting sites should also be possible, of course, even the default.

I have this problem too. I like a challenging game with everything thrown at you, but after a hard day you want to have fun and you end up restarting 20 times and just getting frustrated!

When I was Japan, there was a starting location on a small Island with no fresh water... Ok, I though I could manage somehow. Got my samurais, but also I got crushed before 1500 AD, because there were neither room for expansion nor growth...
So the map really works against me too sometimes.
