  • razed cities

I started a new game -- incidentally, my first at the Prince level as well as my first after downloading the patch from Firaxis -- and I encountered a new problem.

After attacking an opposing city and defeating its forces, instead of taking control of the city, it was automatically razed, without my being given a chance to choose whether to occupy it and install new governors, etc. This happened after each of my first two attacks, both fairly early in the game.

Is this something new in the patch, or is it something that happens sometimes at the Prince level, or what?
    Thanks,
    Howard

A size-1 city with no culture is automatically razed.

not always... afaik only if there are no units, no improvements and no accumulated culture...

Well, of course you can't capture and raze it if there are still units in it. And I'm not sure if the cultural borders have to have expanded to prevent it, or if any culture has to be accumulated. But it does have to do with culture.

i meant all types of units, also no-defence-units
i don't remember ever auto-razing any city with a worker, settler or bombard unit inside.

but, otoh, what do i know
