  • Slow between moves

I have turned the music off, animation of the moves off....ghz computer, with 384 mb ram......but still the game is so slow between moves....there is a lot of waiting time.

I usually play the largest map with all the players.

Can I do anything to make it faster?
    Is this normal?

How many time do you mean by 'so slow'?
Are you playing in Modern Era?

Try turning off "show our animated moves", "show friendly animated moves", and even "show enemy animated moves"

I have turned all the options off....typical time to wait at the start of the game is about 10-12 seconds...
after a while it becomes 2-3 minutes at times.

I start playing from 4000BC with all CIVS and the largest map.

Well, it's actually a little bit long...
          No precise idea for now.

Well then if that length of time is more than you like then you should play smaller maps. Huge maps were added because of fan insistance against the better judgement of Firaxis. Some people don't mind the wait.

Switch to a large map. That should be enough difference for you. The main slowdown is the pathfinding algorithym and the time increases geometricly with map size. So a moderate change in map size can result in a big change in time.

I switched from huge to large map, and the average turn wait time in the Modern Era fell from about one minute to about ten seconds. It's not as fun in that the map's smaller and there are fewer civs, but not having to wait a minute each turn is much more enjoyable.

I experienced the same thing myself. As a programmer I feel safe in saying that kind of delay is to be expected on such a large map. If you create a 256/256 map with 16 civs, by the time everyone has 20 cities thats 320 cities on the map, trust me, thats a lot of number crunching. I was getting up to 1 minute delays late in the game on 200/200 maps on my 900Mhz machine. As long as you're not touching the swap file (ie 256+ MB RAM) it doesn't matter how much memory you add, it ain't gonna speed it up. I jumped to a 1.6 Ghz and cut my times in half . . . well maybe close to half. As a previous poster pointed out, Friaxis didn't want to offer maps that big; I believe it, probably because they *knew* it would take so long later on in the game. But there are those like you and I who love those huge maps, with so much going on. Some of the previous suggestions may help (except for the part about defraging . . . once your in the game and everything is in RAM, hows it's arragned on your disk isn't going to matter), but in the end there is X number of caclulations that have to be done per turn, and that load falls on the processor. My suggestion is either wait it out, or get a faster processor.
