I notived that the City Improvement tab in CivEdit had an "other Characteristics" section, with various check boxes. Presumably the "Coastal Installation" flag measn it can only be built on the coast, perhaps the "Expansionist"/"Scientific", etc. flags trigger a Golden Age for a civ with that characteristic (am I right?), but what do the other ones do?

Yes, you're right:
Coastal installation:
the improvement can only be built in coastal cities
militaristic, industrious, etc:
might trigger golden age for civs of that characteristic
continental mood effect:
whether the mood is influenced on the whole continent or just that city
Tip:
click on help and then click on the item you want to know more about. You'll get a pop-up window with more specific explanations. It's not that obvious... I wondered what help a screenshot of the stuff I can already see is supposed to provide, until I figured out that you can click on it...
