I'm considering moving up to monarch level, and it makes me wonder what sorts of advantages the AI gets on higher difficulties.

jeez - i'll say it again. Look in the damn editor. Open civmod.bic and go to edit rules. Go to the Difficulty Levels tab. The AI gets extra starting units, more free support costs, etc. as you move up the difficulties.Up the Irons!
