    Try adding these lines to your Civilization3.ini

    Keepres=1
    Video Mode=1024
    Refresh=60

      KeepRes keeps the current screen resolution that you are in for the game - say 1280 x 960 instead of the game default resolution of 1024 x 768.

      If you installed Direct X 8.0a, then maybe your video drivers are too old, and need to be updated.

      I ended up buying a GeForce Type 2 MX/MX400 because of my ATI drivers were corrupting files after playing Civ III.

      The Nvidia drivers are just that much better, and no files are corrupted after playing.

      But that is video card manufacturers not keeping drivers up to date.
      Civ III uses Direct X 8.0a or above to play, and old video drivers will not work with it.
      Direct X 8.0a is on the Civ III disk, and may have been installed with the game.
