I think so. I tested this out in-game; I added a Bronze Spearman (+1 defense), available with Warrior Code. The AI had the option to build either this or regular spearman: they opted for Bronze Spearman every time.

There is a mod called the Alien Legacy mod, which adds lots of new units. The AI builds them as well.
