  • A Question about Resources and Ai

I'm trying to make every unit in the game have a resource as a requirement, so let's say I've given the warrior wood as a resource to make his weapon. I can happily move my settler at the beginning to find the right resources so that i can build the warrior. But the AI does not do this, they will just build there city where ever they start and take forever to find the right resource or even some times the resource is write next to there city and the'll not bother to build a road to it.

Has any one got any ideas of how i could get around this?

    Cheers.
    James.

One problem I've encountered is that the AI seems to need to have a basic defensive unit to build when it founds it's first city. In the standard game, that unit is the warrior--the AI builds it's first city and immediately begins work on a warrior. If the AI can't start working on a basic unit right away (becaue of resource or technology requirements), it won't build anything--no units, improvements, wonders or wealth. It will engage in diplomacy (even declare war ), conduct research and use any other starting units you give it, but it won't build.

Even if the AI later acquires a technology for a unit it can legally build, it won't build the unit or anything else. My recommendation is have the warrior require no special resources, but have all other units require a resource. You should find that the AI will work properly then.

I think what needs to be done is that Firaxis needs to make some sort of new field in the editor for resources for a kind of resource that is attainable from any one of a given terrain type. For example, Paper and Wood, two resources, can be accessed from any forest terrain... Clay can be accessed by any river. I mean, it makes sense to do this. That way the AI will almost certainly tap into one of these resources one way or another.

Sounds intriguing. I like the concept. Don't forget you would have to also not require Jaguar Warriors to require wood as well.

I also thought about the issue of extremely available resources, when I was adding the Timber resource to my mod, but I decided that it is reational to make this a particular resource, because you need a certain type of wood which is goodfor ship building and catapult building. You can't just take any wood and build sruff, you need the right kind of stuff.
