  • Is there an advantage to getting all 8 luxury resources"

Well is there? And how do you trade with other civs overseas?

Astronomy allows trade over sea tiles, and Navigation allows trade over ocean tiles. There is no added bonus for having all 8 luxury resources, but they keep your population happy and they're valuable in trade too.

8 luxury ressources and a marketplace = 20 additional happy faces.

If you don't have lots of different luxuries on your own land, try to get them from different civs by trade. As a trade might be cancelled after 20 turns or the other civ might loose it's luxury because it lost it during a war, there's always the chance that all of a sudden you loose that resource.
If you than have other luxuries as well, the effect is not as big on the mood of your citizens, especially if you have market places.

On the other hand you can cancel a trade after 20 turns and often the other civ will be willing to give you some extra money or technique just to keep the trade going. If you spread your trades over different civs and start them at different times, you can keep your science balanced with the other civs, even if you don't spend much money on research yourself.
