  • get past late industrial age (Warlord)

I just bought the game, (moved from RTS), and can't manage to make it to the modern era before i hve to retire, i try to play a game where i put the science rate as high as i can without "shrinking", and by the late middleages have about ...25 cities.

Wot do the people who win the game (non histographicly) do to get that far?

The more cities you have the better it is.

Try to trade techs as much as you can with the AIs, also if that is an unfair deal for you.

if the AIs don't have any techs ahead of you but you have some, sell you tech to the AIs for gold/turn and fundraise this way with all the civs you know about (if you don't the other AIs will do it for you).

Get Library and Uni in most of you cities and remember to build the Forbidden Palace.

Try to get this wonders (in the same city is better) Colossus, Copernicus' Obsvervatory, Newton University, SETI Program.
Try to get the Great Library as well.

    !!!!VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
Build roads everywhere within you cities radius, each road provide you one extra money in that city.

If you still can't make modern times by doing that try using a Scientific civ.

    Hope this help

Trading with the AI is key. In my last game on emperor, I managed to tick off everyone by breaking some trade agreements , and so it was almost impossible to get any kind of reasonable deals on techs. Everyone started to lag behind then, and I had to retire after getting only 2 techs in the modern age.

Shouldn't this be in the Strategy section?

Yes, trading is very important. You can get tech, luxuries, strategic ressources and other things of course, but it's the best way also to improve relationship, which is very important if you plan to win diplomatically.
Furthermore, if you can have lead in tech race, trade some techs to other civs. You can earn lot of money and then invest all your incomes to research; two advantages for improving you tech lead:
          • keep on researching actively,
          • avoid others civs to research actively (they already spend their incomes to buy you techs )

Then tech lead provides two very interesting advantages:
          • be the first to start building a wonder,
          • get the first new more powerful units.

For example, in my current game (Regent, huge map, 16 civs), I just sold Scientific Method to 5-6 civs one turn before completing Theory of Evolution. I'm now researching Replaceable Parts (need only 4 turns), building Hoover Dam, still earning more than 350 gold per turn and providing all eight luxuries to my people.
