  • When to start a war

When is the best time, era, advancement completion, whatever to start a war. Is it best to be nice until someone picks on you or is it easier to win by going to war early. I like the they started it attitude.

The best time to attack is when they're least expecting it. So, forge a mutual protection with a neighbouring country, build up one heck of a military and attack once the 20 turns are up - that way your diplomatic regard won't suffer too badly. Just be careful about what pacts your prospective enemy has with other nations.

Additionally, and if they let you, build up roads (and railroads) right into their territory beforehand in order to expedite troop movements once the invasion is under way.

Obviously, you'll want to have some sort of strategic advantage, i.e you have horse/iron/whatever and they don't. However, if you're invading it's probably because they have a stategic resource and you don't!

So, the moral of the story is - betrayal, betrayal, betrayal!

I tend to go to war soon after my attackers can get an advantage over any defenders - like when I have swordsmen, but before they have pikemen, and after I have cavalry but before they have infantry...
