  • Mutual Protection Pact problem...

I currently have a MPP with France and the Zulu's. I have garnered a peace
agreement with Japan and the Romans after 50+ years of war, but after I've
ended my portion of the turn, the Romans attack France, and I'm back into the
war because of my pact. I can find my MPP in the diplomacy screen under
'active' but when I click on it, it doesn't go away. The manual (p. 141) says
there is no penalty for breaking the pact unless you attack their country. It
fails, however, to explain the renegotiation process...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

Is there a number in parentheses next to the MPP? If so, that's the number of turns before you can cancel the agreement.

Right, you want to cancel the MPP with France? Open up a diplomatic chanel and pick "I'd like to propose a deal" (or whatever the exact wording is). At the bottom of the diplomacy window, between the "we want" and "we give" columns, it should say "active". Clicking on this will allow you to renegotiate any outstanding agreements (including canceling them). Note that to prematurely end a MPP you'll need to renegotiate a peace treaty, which could mean having to give them something else.
