An important part of CIV3 is controlling/acquiring/trading resources. Without them you cannot build the units you need to defend yourself from the AI. If you dont have a particular resource that you feel you need, either trade for it with another civ that has more than one (look at the trade advisor) or take one from another civ by force. We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

I really like it like this. With one map I created my self, resources are not very common. If you build big roads to both iron and horses (and build cities or colonies), you can build knights and you truly kick everyone's butt. I would understand it's not nice if it's the other way around.

Sorry about that; I couldn't resist. Anyways, you're going to either have to trade for it or conquer some territory to try and get it, which may be more difficult if everyone else has musketmen. Depending on the map type, there might be an unexplored island somewhere with saltpeter on it.

I am playing a game as the Egyptians, on a huge island. No Horses!! No UU!! I also had no coal, so I had to conquer some German cities (ps vet Longbowmen work very well against non-vet pikemen in cities, I find they usually win) - this might help if you are quick)
