  • UNIT: Russian T34

Hi, I have been visiting Apolyton for about a year and have finaly been moved to post some of my oum work. I have not yet worked out all the technical stuff involved in modifing Civ III so some one else will probably have to sort these out, but here is the rightly feared T34 Tank (short barreled version, the T34/75 I think. This is only the fidget because I hve lousy software and doing anything at all takes about 6 hours:

Hmm!? I had thought that last comment had included a zip file of my T34 flc, perhaps not. Here is a picture of it before I go to bed anyway: I can sort it out tomorrow.
Or perhaps the picture will be there.. or not. sorry I am a bit of a Luddite.

The snow's odd. Imagine the tank trying to attack equatorian lands and still have snow on top of it.

umm, it's supposed to be the turret hatches, not snow, though I guess that is a valid observation. On the other hand the T34 is a Russian tank and I had designed it for a WWII scenario (Any one remember captain Nemo's Red front ) And the most far south I expect to see the T34 is the Caucuses ( the Russian Oil fields).
On a seperate note any one know how to sort out those darn shadows; I am having to use Corel photopaint and I think it is messing with the colours (Hence the "snow")

Have finished modeling the british MKVIII Churchill, not sure if I should use desert or green colouring. In a WWII scenario the churchill would be the British Main battle tank but would be used mostly in north africa. For the normandy landings an amphibious version would be used, the crocodile (or the royal engineers ARVE vesion, both armed with a 16pnd main gun for bombardment).
Perhaps I should redesign the Green option as the crocodile (with flame thrower).
Any way, Here is the Brown option at the size it would be:

I have been giving some thought as to how the game mechanics of a WWII scenario would work. Experience of Civ II has shown that for a modern warfare scenario to be exiting the rules have to changed just enough for new tactics to be needed.
With the current rules all you have to do is build more tanks than the other nations while holding them back with fortified infantry, more planes and artillery can help swing the ballance, but otherwise it is just down to who has the best/most tanks.

One option would be to limit just exactly what the tanks are expected to do; they cannot take and hold fortified possitions, they are of limited use in urban fighting and are not able to climb moutains.
            Make the unit wheeled.
Give tanks a close ranged powerfull bombard (like Ships).
Reduce attack value to be slightly less than regular infantry (more than urban, sub machine gun infantry).
Increase defence value to be worse than any infantry (they have their bombard for protection.
Oh yes, nearly forgot, here is the green Churchill:

I have been thinking of giving up the whole WWII scenario idea, and have decided to design my tanks to fill specific roles within a NORMAL random map game of civ (there is a big gap between the standard tank, infantry and modern tank, as soon as the mechanised infantry becomes available the std tank becomes obselete.
So with that in mind I have started work on the Churchill ARVE/Crocodile variant.
The Crododile was designed for amphibious attack but had a modified body with reduced armour. It would serve briliantly as Armoured suport for marines or Comandos.
              Here is a shot of the flame thower in action;

                Stupid palete tomfoolery
                The Star is Blue!
                Blue!
It should be civ coloured and where are my shadows!

Don't worry by the time I have finished I aim to have the following:
A T34 unit (without snow and with shadows)
A Churchill MKVIII in desert colours.
An ARVE/ Crocodile with bombard and flame thrower attacks.
A KV1 or IS1 (advanced russian heavy tank)
An armoured car for general use.
All with civ coloured markings and sound effects.

                Here is a picture of a Churchill ARVE in real life;

Well. Sorted out the civ colour problem. (If you don't have CivIII installed when using Flickster the civ colour will not change when you try).
This will be my last post before the units are ready. I still can't get the shadows to work even when I use the pallete utility, this is probably to do with the program I have been using to edit the images but oh well no shadows who cares?
Here are a couple of shots of my Mobile infantry. not shure what I should do for the attack animation, I may just have the lit with enemy fire. (my skills do not extend to animating the individual figures, though it woud be cool to have them all jump out and start firing.
I am thinking of doing a snow coloured vesion as well. so that all possible theatres of conflict are represented.

                    T34 attack finished!
I give permision for anyone to use all the T34 graphics.
for designing sounds to go with the animation the T34 fires twice per action.

rename the down load "T34AttackA.zip" or any other name that comes to mind.
if you leave of the ".zip" all you will get is a useless file called "Attachment".

                    New project.
I am also about to produce some buildings to use as resource/ Objectives (see my comment in the WWII scenario thread)
There will be a military building, an industrial building and a civilian building. (strategic, bonus and luxury resources)
