  • Upper Limits on New Units/Govt/Res/Terr/Impr

Does anyone know what the upper limits are for adding:
(Currently known info is in parentheses, updated as new information is received. Please notify of any mistakes.)

    1. New units
(Unlimited except by the .pcx file. SpencerH is currently testing.)

    2. New Techs
(Gramphos says theoretically unlimited. Currently limited by difficulty in changing pediaicons.txt. So limit is 82 techs according to Mizaq. New techs must replace old ones, new ones cannot be added.)

    3. New Govts
    (Unknown.)

    4. New Resources
(Theoretically 80 resources?? However Willem and other modders indicate that only 24 icons can be used. Extra resources can be used if they use the same icons over again. Monsterman has achieved 80. No one has been able to replicate that yet. )

    5. New Terrain
(none can be added, only replaced? can we confirm this?)

    6. New Improvements
    (unknown)

    7. New LWonders, SWonders
(unknown, possibly limited by # of wonder splash screens available?)

    8. New Civs
(you can add up to 15 more to the existing 16. One slot is taken by barbarians.)

    9. New terrain improvements
    (is this possible?)

    10. New music?
Not an editor change, but some people might want to.

The units are unlimited, or 2^31-1 to be exactly.
For civs, only 15 can be added as Barbarians use one slot, but a problem is the foreign advisor screen...

Techs is theoreticly the same (un)limit as units, but the fact that the icons aren't in pediaicons.txt makes it hard to add.

When you say unlimited units does that include the unit icons? There is limited space in the graphic icon file (I dont remember what its called) and I've been wondering if I can add another row? Will the icon numbering with the editor and with the copytool pick it up if I add another row. This post would make more sense if I was home with the file in front of me!
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

You can add rows to units_32.pcx, but I'm not sure how many...

concerning techs: Every time you add a tech you have to use one less icon. Since there are only 82 icons...

I only knows what the BIC file supports...

Still I don't think it would be very hard for Firaxis to add the techicons to pediaicons.txt...

I'm not sure how many yet either. I just changed the units_32.pcx file to add another 14 icons and the editor recognized the additional 14 spaces. I also started up a saved game and everything looked OK. It looks like the editor had room for a third digit so we may be able to go over 100.

I believe the limit for units_32.pcx is a memory issue/pcx format issue, I don't think the editor has any limits to that.

I'll test out how many rows can be added to the pcx file before (and if) it crashes.

I updated the first post to reflect new information.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Still looking for more info though.

Hopefully this will help us plan our mods better. No sense in coming up with 50 new wonders or 10 new strategic resources if the game can't handle it.

I changed the units_32.pcx to have 140 icon spaces. The editor recognized all 140 no problem. I started a saved game and the unit icons looked fine. So as far as I can tell, the number of units that can be properly added is virtually unlimited.
