How exactly do the images appear? Are the selected at registration, or graduated by number of the user's posts? I want to customize mine...

You can chose an avatar in your profile.
As far as I know you can only chose a custom avatar if you have reached a specific level (Prince?).

Look at the forum FAQ, it's all explained in there.
