Great unit! But in your attacking forward version, the bow passes right through the poor horse's head. What might help is modifying the bow. I recall reading somewhere that some of the better horse archers had the grip 1/3 the way from the bottom so they could easily shoot on either side of the horse. Then again mabey not. either way it'd be nice to see the problem fixed.

Oops! You're quite right JMarks, it DOES go throught the horses head! Fear not however, as all will be corrected in the final version (which may take an extra day or two). Cheers

        I was just wondering....
Which units are replaced by this action?
If you have to replace something, replace the Mounted Warrior.

          To Beren,

As I said in the first post, I made this unit for Exsanguination's soon coming Alexander the Great mod. But the Horse Acher could also be used in a normal civ3 game to give non-european nations something else to build INSTEAD of Knights. After all, it would be 'unrealistic' to allow the English/French/Germans to build Elephants. Well, I think that it is just as 'unrealistic' to allow the medieval Arab nations such as Egypt/Babylon/Persia to build west european feudal Knights, because in reality they used Horse Archers, not Knights.

In the readme.txt file of this unit I have made some suggestions for stats for the Horse Archer along the lines of giving it an attack of 3, a defence of 2, and a move of 3 (they need the speed so that can use their traditional tactic of evading and retreating from an enemy charge). This fits nicely into the gap between Horsemen (2-1-2) and Knights (4-3-2). It means that Horse Archers are not as powerful as Knights, but they are faster, cheaper, and easier to build (by not requiring iron, just horse resources).

I have also made the suggestion of only allowing the French/Germans/Romans-Italians/Greeks/Russians/English (and so Americans as well) to build feudal Knights, while the Egyptians/Babylonians/Persians/Aztecs/Iroquois/Zulus build Horse Archers (the other nations such as India/China/Japan already have UU's of their own instead of Knights).

I know it is not strictly historically correct to allow the Aztecs/Iroquois/Zulus to have Horse Archers, but then again, they shouldn't have Knights either!

Here's a quick preview of the alternative attack animation:-
Has the alternate stationary attack .flc ever been uploaded?? Thanks.

Oops! You are quite right, it hasn't! I loaded the new version at the CivFanatics Centre but forgot to load it here. Naughty of me....sorry!

I'll have the new version uploaded by this evening (it will also give me a good excuse to change the installation instructions which now need Jimmyh's hacked 1.21f editor).

There you go matey! I have now added the new zip files containing the alternative attack.flc to the top of the thread and simplified the downloading procedure. If there is any problems, please let me know.

                Cheers

I'm sorry but I don't know what the problem is, because I can download both files with in no trouble.

Both were created with the zipper that comes with Windows 2000 XP, but to make sure that they work I just download both to my laptop which is still running on Windows 98. Both systems downloaded the files and unzipped them ok.
You could try the civfanatics.com version...

Is anybody else out there having problems? Better still, could XMon or anyone else who has successfully got these files to download/unzipped/and working please let me know?

Well, I haven't seen the new animation in a game yet since I haven't reached chivalry...but, the zips are not corrupt with WinZip. They both open up fine.

Glad to see the d/l's here at Apolyton working again! No more Attachment.doc.
