  • Disbanding cities

    Hi group,

I have spent a good ten hours or more reading posts from various threads. I have covered quite a bit even though I consider myself a slow reader. I have seen many talk about disbanding cities by pop-rushing a settler. My problem is that pop-rushing or by regular shield accumulation, I have never been able to disband a city. Despite having all the shields, my size two city will not finish the settler unless the city grows to size three.

Granted, I have not gotten past the beginning stages of the game because I keep starting over to try a new approach. Thus, the cities that I am trying to disband are my own, not ones captured from other civs (does this make a difference?).

I have patch 1.17f installed: does this matter as well? I have only been playing since mid-February 2002.

    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Anthony

The city won't disband if it has any excess food production. Make sure you turn enough citizens into entertainers/specialists/whatever so that there is no food growth.

      Accomplishing a disband

I had seen something about excess food in one post, but I didn't fathom the significance. I thought it was to make sure the settler doesn't complete at the moment the city grows to size three. I was so busy I hadn't played the game in days and couldn't check this.

So, sending the city into even or decreasing food will finish the settler.

It makes sense to me now: the designers know that many automate their cities, so having the city wait until it can legitimately produce a settler seemed best. The message that popped up warning that waiting wouldn't do any good (no food growth) provided me the choice to disband.

It is interesting to note that One's first city when starting the game can also be disbanded. The settler can then move and establish a new capital again equipped with a free palace. It doesn't seem practical, but maybe someday this will be a worthy trick.

      Thank you, steelehc
